T2 pinpoint sensitivity adjustment

New here to findmall, good info...

Sometimes I pull out one of my manuals and read it entirely again... Pg.18 of the T2 classic manual, last section, talks about adjusting the pinpoint mode sensitivity. It states that by default the pinpoint sensitivity is @ 60, but can be adjusted by holding the pinpoint trigger and turning the knob. Does anyone have any feedback on performance after adjusting this setting? I have always ran mine at default. I intend to play around with it the next chance I have. (When the rain breaks), but unitl then, I thought maybe someone could share some
First hand knowledge.

I was looking for the section that mention the gain increase when discrimination is in the 50 range or lower than 5, if I recall correctly... if anyone can point me to that info, I would also Appreciate it.

It's my second year with this machine software V9, and I am still learning new things...

I did not know about this....and am embarrassed to say I have tens of thousands of hours on the classic and SE. I'm not certain how this function would help though...it seems the pin point default 60 works fine even when the VDI and tones start to mis-identify and tell you that it's iron. Example- target is 12 inches, it's really a coin, the VDI is all over the place, the tones are some high, some low, but at 60 default the pinpointer would be perfect (even at 60 the pinpointer is perfect whenever the machine reads ANY metal target) So why would making the pinpointer deeper help when the VDI and tones wouldn't tell you it's a dig-able non-ferrous?

I have no idea how it would help, but I am going to play around with it in the test bed and see if going higher or lower on the setting has any usefulness.

I just read something else interesting as well. Pg.30 (top of page) begins with " when the T2 first turns on, the ground cancellation Phase Number is preset to 90. This will give a positive response on nearly all soils. If you search in Discrimimation mode, you will probably not have to ground cancel . If you switch to all metal mode, ground cancellation will probably be necessary".

I have always done a fast grab and ground balanced. Does anyone ever just turn it on and go? I am going to also try this and see what effect it has.

I have read that part and also wondered about it. I've tried it and couldn't determine what effects it produced. The ground grab never goes to 90....mine is always between 60 and 80.

Curious how not adjusting, and leaving it at its default 90, will affect depth and general operations.

The gain boost comes in when you are in disc mode with disc set from 50 to 58 or disc mode with disc set from 0 to 10.

Thanks for sharing this. I too had never noticed it in the manual. I wonder if adjusting the pinpoint sensitivity will help improve the depth reading accuracy while pinpointing?

I have yet to mess with this setting at all, i have been testing and comparing a couple of different machines. I did order the Sharpshooter coil for the T2 and the Snake as well. I plan on running that combination through a long test and hunting period. If i notice anything I'll post it up and let you know.... if i remember

I have a theory that I need to check out, I believe that the pinpoint sensitivity adjustment is mainly used when using aftermarket coils that require ground balancing at sensitivity levels less than or greater than 60. I believe that if you ground balance at a level other than the default of 60, then you must set pinpoint sensitivity to the same setting so that the pinpoint depth reading has the same sensitivity base reading so the computer can accurately calculate the depth of an object. The reason that I suspect this is because I just received a CORS Strike coil and the instructions that came with it called for ground balancing it at the 50 sensitivity level. When I located a target and pinpointed it, and dug it, in all cases the target was 1 to 2 inches shallower than the reading on the screen. So the next time that I go detecting, before I pinpoint I'll change the pinpoint sensitivity to the same sensitivity level that I ground balanced the coil and we'll see if it makes the depth reading on the screen more accurate.

I tried adjusting pinpoint sensitivity both up & down, however it made no difference in correcting the 1 1/2" high reading on target depth. I believe now that the only way to get the depth reading correct is to have the detector calibrated for the coil.Other than that, I'm very pleased with the way the T2 Classic performs with the CORS Strike 12x13 coil.

If I remember correctly all it does is either make the pinpointed target volume louder or quieter depending upon setting. If the pinpointed target is too loud, turn it down. If you turn it down too low, you can only pinpoint/retune once before the audio goes quiet. Default allows you to detune a number of times to narrow the target response making it easier to pinpoint.
