Howdy,
Last Friday I was going to continue trying at a site where I last found a SLQ, but first wanted to check out another spot that research suggested should hold some oldies if it hadn't been modified too much. Well, try as I might, I just couldn't locate a hot spot. And the clad was turning up past 4-5 inches, which wasn't too encouraging. But before giving up, I spotted one older looking tree across the way that seemed worth checking out the area near it. That did me in. I found the Merc pretty quickly, so figured I'd better give the area a more careful scan. Burned up lots of time that way, and nothing else to show for it! Oh well, I had a Merc at least.
As I headed back to where I had intended to hunt, I noticed someone at another spot I was interested in, but hadn't caught anyone around to seek permission before. This was the day though. I asked, and was granted, so I saddled up and got to it again. At this point I only had about an hour left, so just sampled a bit here and there. Had the Pro coil on, and was running into lots of signals. I was recovering several, to get a sense of age, depth, and how things were spread out.
In that short time, I caught two separate pocket spills of Wheats - one with three, one with four, and another lone Wheat. I caught the dates on a couple to know I had some age, but I just couldn't catch that silver screamer in the time I had. However, I will be able to return and spend more time doing a more methodical search in the future.
And the age is what is taunting me. The Wheats turned out to be two 1909 (neither of them VDB or S), then singles 1910, 1919, 1921, 1930-D and then a 40 and 45-D. And condition indicated they were dropped relatively new. I sure hope I can catch silver from this place!
So now that leaves me with two new sites to poke at, and add into rotation. These should last awhile too.
