My wife and I attended a large estate sale last summer and bought several antiques including this huge circa 1860 cast iron tea kettle. This thing holds a couple of gallons of water and weighs nearly 20 pounds. It is in remarkably good condition although it could use a good cleaning.
This estate had belonged to a elderly man and when he passed away his children sold everything. The old man had nearly every item tagged with a note that explained the family history behind each item.I found a note in the bottom of the kettle written on yellowing paper that said "Great,Great,Grandma Mullers tea kettle"
It was obvious that many of the items had been in the family for generations and the old man had gone to some trouble to identify the family history behind each item.Perhaps for the benefit of his children or grandchildren.Instead, the items were sold to strangers days after the old man died.I don't know the details or circumstances, but it seemed kinda sad to me.
