Tejon at the beach???

Wooden Nickel

New member
Am going to the beach this summer, and wondered if anyone has experience using a Tejon in the sand. I'm still learning the machine, and if I can guess, stay as far away from the wet sand as possible. Otherwise, how will it work?

Any tips on hunting the outer banks area? Is it off limits?

Thanks. :coastgaurd: vet

Stay away from the wet sand and water it it works good in the dry just not wet salt.
:coastgaurd:me too

I tried beach hunting on my last vacation, and it was not what I expected. I kind of thought I would go and run my detector and find my share of the good stuff I hear about. Seems that the guys were watching what was going on during the day and then late evening or early morning they would run out in the areas of activity and scan for goodies.

I just went out like I was home going to a park and hunt, I went for hours sometimes without a beep. I even took the time to put some test targets in the sand to make sure I could read them and I could.

So you may want to take your fishing pole along just in case.:)

if you are going to spend much around salt water treasure hunting get a PI unit like the Tesoro Sand Shark,I love mine I also have a Tiger Shark for fresh water.

A friend of mine in New York told me that he uses a widescan 5.75" on his Tejon on the wet sand and he has 0 issues. It confirmed my theory.

Stay in the dry sand.Remember, the tejon loves low conductors like gold and nickel. You got the perfect detector for going deep in the soft sand areas. The tejon will go deeper than most high end detectors. If you want to become a full fledged beach bum, then get yourself a sand shark for the wet sand. :)

Allcav is right..I am the guy who swings a tejon at the beach with my 5.75 widescan. I am sure other detectors may be better suited but I have found a pile of good stuff right up to the water. Here is a partial list from the last couple months...

20 indian heads prior to 1875, including an 1866 and an 1869.
1857 flying eagle cent
1857 silver half dime
1866 2 cent
1855 silver 3 cent
1865 copper 3 cent
2 shield nickels..one in f20 or better
1837 hard times token
6 pieces of silver jewelry including a complete bracelet with 23 pieces of cut amethyst
2 complete sweet civil war coat buttons and one partial cuff button
metropolitan ny police flat button from approximately 1860
But sadly no gold...yet

Also got an 1805 draped bust large cent from a spot near the Hudson river..don't be jealous though... it is in rough shape.

Will post some pics when I get the time to take decent ones...

I guess that small foot print coil allows you to ground balance to the wet sand.I am so glad i have a new tejon. The first one i had i did not us the dual disc much but now i really like having this feature.

Dert I think It's where you're hunting and your talent with the detector that's making the difference not the detector. I think you put an average detectorist in that spot with that detector and they wont find much. I'm jealous! :beers: Let's not forget you found that 1857 silver half dime with my DFX. I'll keep ya honest!

Yeah..okay... so I did find one thin dime the day you kindly lent me your DFX while my tejon was in for repairs. As long as we are splitting hairs then let it be known that I also found some of the stuff with an old cutlass 2 umax with an 8" donut coil that I was testing before I send it to a friend to give to his grand daughter... this fact is certain.. if my buddy oneon didn't take me to this spot then I would not have found so much good stuff. And thanks for the compliment ...I respect your opinion and your detecting skills..not many people can say they are in the annual whites calender like you are...:please:
