Tejon question

I'm thinking about getting a Tejon and trading or selling my cz5. I'd like some users of both detectors to give me their opinions on each detector. I am a coin and jewelry hunter and hunt lawns and some old picnic groves. Ground minerals are low where I hunt so that shouldn't be a factor. I have read the tejon loses depth in bad ground and then I read bad ground doesn't affect it so I'm not sure what to believe. The tejon sounds like a great detector from what I have read about it, but I know the cz5 can still kick ass. I appreciate any comparisons in depth etc. you can give me on the two detectors. thanks..............Roger

I've got both and am keeping both. Well my CZ is a 6a not a 5, but essentially the same animal.

Most of the ground I hunt is fairly mild. I have done OK with the Tejon in some more challenging conditions like gravel parking lots that are pretty hot.

I have found the CZ to be a little deeper on dimes and quarters and the Tejon to be a little deeper on the nickles, lead and other mid-conductivity range targets. Tejon is very sensitive to small foil. If you are looking for the small earring studs and small chains, you will dig a lot of tiny pieces of foil, but the Tejon will find the very small gold too. CZ will not see the thin chains. We have some hollow link gold chains with very fine links that the Tejon doesn't see either, but it detects smaller link sizes than many detectors will.

The Tejon gets trips to the beach with the cleansween coil to do dry sand work and cover a lot of area, but does not do very well over the wet salt areas. Have to work to handle the black sand, but it can work it reasonable effectively as long as it is dry and not mixed with wet salt.

I really like the coil choices with the Tejon. The 5.75 inch concentric is great in trash and does not give up much depth over the standard coil. I mentioned the clean sweep for covering ground. I like it on sports fields too. The standard coil is very good unless it gets trashy, then I go to the 5.75. I have the 12 x 10 DD, but am not using it a lot. I can see using it for open area relic hunting but would have to go with a smaller coil if an area of concentrated targets and iron showed up. I don't do much of that type of hunting presently.

I know money can be a concern; but I'd try to work out having both. It's nice to have a back up! Consider looking for a used Tejon from one of the sponsors here. They seem to turn up at good prices, in good condition, fairly frequently.
Cheers,
tvr

Thanks for the info tvr. Money is a concern right now or I wouldn't even think about trading the cz 5 off. I have a back up detector, a Silver

Given that you have and like a Silver ... I think I'd stay with the CZ and the Silver combination, practice long term patience, and try to squeeze out $5 or $10 dollars a week to put away until the money put away could match a deal on a good used Tejon from a reputable source. Tejon retune speed is better than the CZ. Tejon, particularly with a 5.75 inch coil mounted, helps it unmask targets that are hard to separate out with the CZ. The CZ does really like to hit the silver coin range, just got to take your time and work slow from more than one direction to help it unmask when in trash. The 5 inch coil on the CZ helps in trash but it looses more depth over the 8 inch than the Tejon looses with the 5.75 versus the standard coil.

I have other detectors that I would get rid of before the Tejon or CZ. I'd have a VERY tough time deciding between the two. They are different and somewhat complimentary.

My two cents is enjoy what you have and save some money while looking for a deal on a Tejon. Even better; a deal with a Tejon with a standard and a 5.75 inch coil.

tvr, thanks for your thoughts on the tejon and cz5. I think I will just hold on to the cz5 and maybe save up for a tejon maybe in the spring. It will soon be too cold to hunt here in Illinois and even if I did trade the cz5 off I wouldn't get much use out of the tejon this season, plus you never know..... Tesoro might have a new detector out by the spring. Thanks again for the help.............Roger

Hey Roger,

I sold a Tejon a year ago, then wished I didn't. I wanted it back, so I sold my MXT and got another Tejon. That's how much I like the Tejon. I'll take the Tesoro's models anyday over most of the other manufacturers out there today. I love my Tejon, so easy to set up, so easy to figure out what it's saying and it finds the good stuff while ignoring the trash.

I bought a Tejon in 2007, had great success with it, then decided to try other machines. To make a long story short, I'm back with the Tejon. I may still try other machines, but I will not make the mistake of selling my Tejon again. Come to think of it, selling my Golden uMax was a mistake too. That was a fun machine in the parks and schoolyards.
