Tesoro Outlaw

Just picked up a Outlaw, what a pleasure to use. I am a fan of Tesoro, any tips on the Outlaw

Yes...don't use the Retune button, use the 3 position Mode toggle switch instead and use the Auto all metal to retune the threshold. The Auto all metal mode is used to ground balance the machine. You need to pump the coil to the ground rather briskly during ground balancing so that it does not return to threshold too quickly on it's own.

good advice right there ^^^^^ only hit the red button in emergences, although I do use it I don't use it more than once a hunt and that comes with some time with the detector.

I have no issues with my little red button. After finding an interesting target, I typically press it in all the way to the auto tune all metal mode in order to hear the difference between the disc and all metal, it's quicker than flipping the switch, for me anyways. Afterwords, before moving on to the next target, simply raise the coil in the air and press the red button all the way in and hold until you hear the threshold reset.

I seriously dislike the Retune button and it has caused me a lot of grief in the past because I didn't understand it. The product manual is so poorly written that it doesn't explain it clearly. I like the Outlaw's all metal mode and it has good depth and target separation. I've made some good finds with it, but overall I guess I've just never been that happy with it. I'm thinking of trading back to a Vaquero.

I own both for now, l prefer the "V", may sell the Outlaw, not sure yet.

I own a lot of Tesoros, some are the oldies and some that are still in production. The best of them (my bias) in the iron nails pits that I hunt at are the ED-120 Disc. circuit machines that Jack designed and made the Tesoro brand famous . Especially the manual ground balanced original Bandido and Bandido ll which are the benchmark when working in the small iron debris found around the old torn down houses, old churches and picnic groves. The Outlaw in my opinion from my many hours in the field, my feeling is that it may be closer to the DNA of the original Bandido,, rather than the Bandido ll µMax. If you can work around the problematic "Retune" button and not use it, then just use the 3 position Mode switch to do everything the Bandido ll µMax can do and work more like the original Bandidos. Lighter too, original Bandido is 3 lbs, compared to 2.2 lbs of the Outlaw with similar 8" coils.

Good info, Hombre. How can you tell which detectors are ED120 or ED180? It's not on the Tesoro.com product pages that I can find.

Hi Kapok...

It would be easier to name off the ED-180 machines rather than all of the ED-120.

The Amigo ll was the first ED-180 also the original Lobo... guessing on production date of 1997...

The Micro Max Eldorado, replaced the Bandido ll µMax about 2001...

The Compadre ..the Tejon and Lobo ST in about 2001...

That is the best I could do from the top of my head.

I do like my outlaw I don't use the red button only when changing a coil, and really biggest coil I use is 7" so pin point is fine anyway no button needed.

I like it for park hunting gold it has done pretty good , hits coins too, see a lot for sale 2nd hand guess that red button doesn't agree with most shame like as you said nice detector.

wonder if Jack had anything to do with putting the Outlaw together?

He would have approved of the wonderful Disc. circuit though, it is a spitting image of the original Bandido. The Outlaw is inches deeper than the Bandido in the Disc. mode.
