Tesoro's preset ground balance and changing coils

The several Tesoro's with preset ground balance I've had over the years were balanced too postive for our soil conditions, not excessively but quite a bit more than when set for optimum results, except the Golden I got last week. With the 8X9 and 10X12 it was perfect, just slightly positive which gives the best results here and how I've balanced with all manual GB detectors I've had. I put a 7" X2 coil on the Golden this afternoon and it was so positive quarters were rejected, quickly remedied by pulling the faceplate and balancing with the pot but any idea why it went so positive going to a smaller coil? Have had to rebalance when going to a larger coil before but never when going to a smaller coil with any brand detector with preset GB. Odd, but the 7" works like a champ and is a better match for the Golden than the spoked coils .

Sounds like the GB trimmer was set in a position (relative to the windings in the spoked coils) to be too positive for the inherent properties of the 7" coil.
Tesoro can "tune" the various coils, by varying the length of the winding, so that on fixed GB detectors, all your coils will work at an acceptable level.
You are right though, it generally is the other way around with larger coils falsing due to improper GB.
