Test Range and Real-World Test of 4.5 x 7" Excel Coil...Pics Part ONE

I haven't tried the 14...I have the 12.5 and I think that's about my limit for coil size. It pinpoints very well, get's nice coverage, and great depth.

Jerry, I'll get to the beach someday in the near future but there's NOTHING happening there right now and it's a good 20 minute drive. I had my Explorer II there a few times and never had any problem, either with the 10.5" or the 12.5". I don't hunt the beach with my Explorer anyway, just the Excal. But I will try to get down there though.

I think that you have the bases covered for Coils now. I myself have an arsenal. I have the 8" Minelab, 2-10.5" Stock Coils (one is the XS version and the other is a Explorer II), the 5X10 Joey Coil, Sunray X-12 12" Coil. I thought about getting a 5" but just haven't purchased one yet. I use my Joey Coil when hunting in Trashy Areas and it has done very well for me. I would have to say that your new Coil goes just as deep as the 8" Coil so it would most likely be a waste of money to purchase one. Just my Opinion though! Continued Success and Good Luck and HH.

I had to say nice pictures of your SE, I ordered one, Are you Like a Professional Have you ben a Explorer guy for a wile????
My Question is what do i do to go DEEPER for Silver,
Ben Whites for 20+ years im scared, MickFin,

Well, an "expert" usually means you do it for a living. And since I have a REAL job, I guess as far as metal detecting goes I'm an amateur. But I've done alright...weather it's digging diamond rings on the beach or silver coins, bullets, and buttons in the field...I've gotten my share.

The Explorer is a big difference for you, coming from a Whites. I used to have a DFX myself. You need to learn the machine a little, for sure. And for that I would recommend laying out a bunch of stuff like coins, jewelry, and some trash on a blanket in a clean area OUTSIDE and get to see how the machine reacts. Practice pinpointing. Decide between Smartfind and Digital. Get to know the machine. Then go try it in the real world. As for "how to go deeper", deeper that what? Than your White's? The key to deep with an Explorer is to keep your coil low, sweep it slow, and above all to know the machine, know the tones, and know what deep silver sounds like. Of course to do that, you have to find some first. You will.

I recommend Fast - Off, Deep - On, Gain at 6 (to start) and Sensitivity depends...at a clean site that's relatively trash and iron free, maybe run it at manual maybe 25. If there's a lot of iron or trash you may want to drop it down a bit, like to 20 maybe.

First order of business is to get out there and play around with it, then come back and ask questions. Good luck.

Where did you get that coil? Excelerator's site does not list it.

In the legal world, an 'expert' is defined as someone who has knowledge/experience about something, much in excess of the average person.

Well thank you very much. There are certainly many around here that have more experience and knowledge than I do, but I do feel I know my machines pretty well.

These forums have helped me a great deal over the years...lots of good folks that took the time to share their knowledge. I think it's the duty of anybody that has ever learned anything on here and become a successful hunter to step up and help out the newbies once they are no longer newbies themselves..."pay it forward", as they say. It's what makes the forums great.

I'm glad to see you are having much success with the 4.5 x 7 coil....

Having any suggestions on a digging tool for Bermuda grass .( Devils Grass!) most the parks around here are covered with it..Murder on the wrist!

Thanks Bruce

How about a Lesche digger with serrated edge? I have a Lesche hand digger and also a Groundshark, which is a T-handled digger with a foot pedal...digs some nice DEEP plugs.

Here's the hand digger...

Here's the Groundshark...look around here or Google it for pics...I have the 36" one.

I'm sure glad I ordered mine last week, it should be here tues. but after seeing your post pop back up on the front page, I'm sure that it might get a little difficult to find one. Wish I'd had it yesterday because DirtRob & I were at a really old site...(for around here) probably mid-late 1800's & Iron everywhere. We didn't find anything worth keeping but will probably hit the site again in the future...I used Rob's 5" excellerator & was fairly impressed with it. I'll give it a try at my local trash park today & try to be able to post some silver, but I'm truely looking forward to that little 4X7... This Is a pic of Dirt Rob & his new Tesoro...

I see you are sporting the exact same Leather Pouch that I use out in the field. How do you like it??? And I use the Lesche Digger also, you just can't find a better Digger for cutting Tree Roots and it is fairly sharp when you need to get thru tougher ground. What machine are you using there in the picture? Tesoro??? Good Luck and HH at that site. Looks interesting!

I figured that because of the machine in use, but wasn't 100% sure. Thanks for the clarification TomTowns and Good Luck and HH at that site!
