It looks like mapping, and or water detecting is the answer for newer good finds ,and Old coin possibilities.

I would be very interested in learning how to on the mapping option.

Anyone who can post up the way to research using Internet maps I would really appreciate your skills..

Hi Elton,

I use http://www.historicmapworks.com/Search/search.php


on this page I click on LOCATION on the left hand side menu

now you will be on a page that says LOCATION SEARCH

select your state from the drop down menu and TYPE the town you want to scout out.

now on the next page you will see (hopefully for your area ) a list of maps.

click on one that you find interesting

Now you will see something that says OVERLAY THIS MAP / HISTORIC EARTH PREMIUM / HISTORIC EARTH BASIC ( BASIC is free so you want to obviously choose this one) click on this sign.

Let the maps load and off on the right hand side of the screen you will see a slider bar and the phrase CHANGE MAP OPACITY (This will lighten or darken one map on top of the other) Play with this slider function and you will see what I am saying.

Now you can either use the controls to zoom in or out OR you can double click on the map itself to draw in closer to the area you want to check out.

Elton, Mapworks free support is awesome. The maps won't line up exactly but they work well when trying to locat a potential site. Some mapping companies added homesteads, churches, and schools. Others just show property lines....fortunately in my area they show the homesteads on the oldest maps.
Also try historical aerials, they don't have good coverage of the USA but might have your area covered. I am fortunate there as they go back to 1955 in my area. Its a very helpful tool.
