1914: World War I begins
1918: Armistice signed between Allies and Germany on Nov. 11
1919: US President Wilson declares Nov. 11 "Armistice Day"
1954: Armistice Day renamed "Veterans Day"
Also called "Remembrance Day or Poppy Day" in other countries is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth countries to remember the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. This day, or alternative dates, are also recognised as special days for war remembrances in many non-Commonwealth countries. November 11th, "Remembrance Day" is the primary designation for the day in many Commonwealth countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. However, "Armistice Day" (the event it commemorates) also remains, often to differentiate the event from Remembrance Sunday, and is the primary designation used in New Zealand and France. "Poppy Day" is also a popular term used, particularly in Malta and South Africa. "Veterans Day" also falls upon this day in the United States, yet many other allied nations have quite different Veterans Days.
---"Anzac Day" is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, and is commemorated by both countries on April 25 every year to honour members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. It now more broadly commemorates all those who died and served in military operations for their countries.
---"Memorial Day" is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 31 in 2010). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War

AMEN!!!! I for one remember World War II and had an Uncle and others I knew to fight in that war and to keep America free from Germany, Japan and other dictatorship nations from taking over our nation and setting free those who were enslaved by so many evil leaders and followers, altough many were forced or lose their lives and far too many lives were lost in WWII and all the other Wars fought by brave military men, women and their families, friends and loved ones who sacrificed a lot for our great nation, the USA! Thanks David for your info and the story about the school teacher and the desks....a lesson needing to be taught to all the children and even adults to be able to understand how our nation's freedom was won and how it is kept! No one likes wars but we love freedom or should and it seems until Jesus sets His Kingdom of peace upon the Earth, we will continue to have Wars, because people forget when they become fat and lazy with plenty of food and filled pocketbooks! The Israelites did the same during their time in history and history repeats itself over, over and over! May God Bless our military men, women and families with protection and provisions that are needed, daily, and May He Bless America and keep us free from all enemies foreign and domestic! Amen! Ma Betty

Right on Betty! VERY well said! I often wonder why God does not intervene and help stop wars? Why God does not eliminate and kill(**give them a heart attack as God can do this as done in the Bible on the man who did not pay up the full proceeds of the sale of his land with money held in common and he dropped dead) evil leaders like Hitler and his Generals(is about the worst example), etc., etc., etc.?

**Acts 5:1-11

When Jesus returns to earth and takes his 1000 year rule I think we will NOT have a very bad type of socialism like is around the world in the past and now BUT instead a very good type of free socialist type govenment under Him. Meaning fairness for the poor and the rich are not to amass large amounts of money, evening things out between poor and the rich. Where the poor are MUCH better taken care of and the rich are not live the way they do now.

Men cannot manage things as it has been a disaster so far and always will be with VERY bad governments, inconsistant and bad laws(like the banning of Bibles and Christianity in Saudi Arabia and North Korea, etc, etc.), pollution, wrecking the environment, extinction of animals, about 30,000 per day or about 10 million children per year dying from mostly preventable things, spending too much on military, too may nuclear bombs made, unfairness in all aspects, and just a mess in general. We need Jesus to be head of governments and the sooner the better!!

Thank you, David! Yes, our Gov't leaders need to be saved and know Jesus, personally, and rule with fair laws and justice systems, but it won't be until Jesus sets up His Kingdom on this earth! He will bring the world peace while no other will or can! The meek will inherit the earth and live with Him, forever! To be meek means to have a saved soul which is made righteous in God's righteousness! When anyone lies to or denies the Holy Spirit of God, they are not forgiven in this world or the next! God knows our every thought and we can lie but we cannot FOOL GOD or HIS HOLY GHOST (SPIRIT)! Many are fooled but with Jesus as our savior, God's Holy Spirit reveals the absolute truth of God's Word when we ask and seek Him with all our hearts, souls, minds and strengths! God is AWESOME and gave us JESUS to dwell within those who love and accept Him and His Holy Spirit is our Comforter! Amen! This mortal life isn't fair but our eternal life will be when we are dwelling with Jesus forever more! Amen! Ma Betty
