Headed up to the Cape San Blas, Fl area with my wife and the Safari where we rented a house for the week on Port St. Joe Beach. Never hunted these beaches so I was excited about what they might yield. Hunted Port St Joe, Mexico Beach, and St Joseph Peninsula Park. St Joseph is a state park, but detecting is allowed along the high/low tide lines. In all I only found about a $1.25 in clad, but what a beautiful area and sunsets. Sometimes the truly good finds are not monetary at all. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I also enjoy just being at the beach and even if I don't detect anything of any worth, it's ok because the scenery, sounds and smells makes up for it. Also, you find some really interesting people from all over the world!! I enjoy taking photographs and here are just 6 of many Ive taken at the beach!

Sanderling......I hope you didn't mind kinda hyjacking your original post with my pic's!

We visited Port St Joe last year and loved the place. Like you, just a bit of clad on my day there but still really enjoyed the place. They've got one of the best sporting goods stores I have ever been inside in that tiny town too. A bit of everything sports related and at good prices too.
Happy Thanksgiving from me too!

GS, you can hijack my posts anytime. Nice pics. Particularly like the boards lined up on the sand. Good eye Gold Strike! I will have to post a couple sunsets when I get home.

KinTn, missed the sporting goods store you mentioned. My wife said there was one in the Piggly Wiggly shopping center behind McDonalds. Is it Blue Water Outriggers? Maybe next time.

Thanks for the responses. Had a great week here.

Its right by the Piggly Wiggly to the left as you face the store. Cant rem the name, but that sounds right.
And yeah, there was a McD's in front of the PW, so that has to be it.

So you gave up on the old home site you had permission for?
Heard or saw nothing posted on that as a follow up hunt.

Hey Coilfisher, I have not given up on it. Was there at the end of October and we had a vacation last week and just busy with other things and simply have not had the opportunity to get back there. It is about 45 minutes away and when I do get back there, not sure when, I will let you all know if I find anything besides pennies. Until then let us know how your hunting has been going.

Some sunset photos and a beach photo from the Forgotten Coast as the Cape San Blas area is called. The beach is Mexico Beach with its powder white sand. Unfortunately this picturesque spot only yielded the photo as I never even hit a target of any kind with the Safari.

Sanderling..........what settings do you have on your Safari when you detect those beach's? There has to be targets there unless they have replenished the heck out out it! If your Safari dosn't pick up anything, you might want to buy, borrow a P.I. detector to punch down deeper into the sand and if it's waterproof, the wet/surf areas.

Gold Strike: I usually keep the Safari in all metal mode on the beaches. I think the sensitivity is around 12. Gotta tell ya that I have had that experience of no to few targets in Daytona as well, particularly this year. The machine works fine and I did okay later up at St Joseph Peninsula Park where I found some clad. Sand at Mexico Beach could have been replenished, I am not sure. Thanks for the input.

I'm not sure if you have to deal with black sand on those beach's like we have along the SoCal coast but you may want to crank the sensitivity up to 17-18+or auto because there is a big difference in detecting depth between 12 to 18sensitivity. Also use the biggest coil you have. A WOT coil works great on a Safari at the beach!
What I do is to ground balance occasionally and especially going from dry sand to damp/wet sand and also when your around the magnetite/black sand which usually runs in a strip near the water line. Those beach's look really nice and I can see a hotel in the one pic. That should be a great area to detect as the hotel guest's would probably stay around that area of the beach. Don't be put off if you start to find pull tabs etc; because you will know that's where the sunbathers have been:thumbup:

No black sand here GS. We do get a lot of red sand from time to time which is grainier and softer than the hard pack typically found on Daytona. I do not have a lot of luck in the red sand. If I turn the sensitivity up too high I find that I get a lot of noise interference in the wet sand/shallow water area. I do have a big 15" SEF coil that I use on the beach. It will go pretty deep, about 18". I was unaware that you can ground balance the Safari as I thought it was automatic and then read your post of 10/7/2012 addressing that procedure. I will follow your advice. You are correct in your observation about the hotel. It was the El Governor on Mexico Beach and it was precisely my thought that it would be the best area to detect. Did not find anything though. As always, thanks for your input. You are quite knowledgeable and we should confer an honorary PhDoD (Doctor of Detectorist) on you :super: lol.
