I would have gotten back sooner after my post the other day, but got tied up on some phone business. DK asked about someone from Pascagoula. I am about 15 miles west In Ocean Springs. Other than the occasional smell, so far so good. It has already gotten to Chandelier Island off the La. coast. It will probably affect us later on this week. They have closed all commercial and recreational fishing as of two days ago. I learned today that the amount of oil spill could have been minimized had the Govt. enacted the spill contingency plan, which calls for deployment of fire booms immediately after the spill. There is supposed to be 10 of those units on the Gulf Coast, by law dating back to the 1960's. Although BP and possibly Haliburton will be ultimately responsible for clean up, it could have been minimized had the Government followed protocol. The are supposed to have a dome ready in less than 48 hours to lower over the leak, capture the oil and pump it into tankers on the surface. They hope to be able to capture at least 85% of the leaking sweet crude. The report today has the spill is around 2200 square miles, down from around 3500 square miles as of last Thursday. This reduction is due to natural sea action which is breaking up the spill and sinking some of it to the ocean floor where it will be naturally be consumed by bacteria.

Glad your area is doing fairly well at this time! The oil spill is going to affect everyone because of ships not being able to get in and out with their cargos......making what we need to buy scarce and more expensive May God in His grace have mercy on us! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty
