Construction work continues at an old house site, and more dirt has been moved. This site has delivered a large cent, several IHPs including an 1864L and 1868, several tokens (including one for military goods with a civil war date), a 1918 merc, and a minie ball (possible Morgan’s Raid).
I keep hoping they will tear out more of the old paving without going too deep. The recent work did a little of that and delivered a ’35 wheat, a nice looking merc and another IHP! This one was fairly well caked, but I let it dry out for a few days before trying to clean it. Amazingly, it is the third key date 1860’s IHP I have found here! This one is an 1866! I included before and after cleaning pictures.
The brass bell is the second one I have found here. I do not know what the brass double fork thing is - pehaps a fence topper?
In between cleaning sessions, I returned to the site where I found a Spanish American War medal. I didn’t find much on this trip except a curious rectangular brass item with two thin bars on it. One end is crumpled, so it looks triangular. On the back is a fragment of a brass band. A slight irregularity on the opposite surface from this band makes me wonder if a similar band (clip or continuation of the remaining band) was attached here. Could this be some form of military rank insignia? If anyone has seen something like it, I would very much like to know!
