The 4.5" coil revisited

Hey guys. Sorry for all the questions, being I don't have my GTAx-550 yet anyhow, but I want to know some things in advance to make my life easier. Anyhow, I found a great spot today when I went for a walk. All kinds of really old broken glass, plates, pipes, etc. I think this looks like a good place to start for old coins. HOWEVER, amongst all these broken pieces of the past sitting on the surface, were many bits of iron, nails, etc. With the 7x10 eliptical, I don't think I'd ever find a coin. You guys suggested the 4.5" for trashy areas. My question is this. Would I be better off with a 4.5" coil here, or just set my detector to not pick up iron? I'm not sure what else will be eliminated in doing this, but it shouldn't eliminate coins should it? Thanks <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt="">

Hi Wess. Good idea to ask as much as you can now. I`ve only been detecting for just over a year now and found out a lot by trial and error before finding this Garrett forum. My GTA 1000 has surface elimination so i can detect under that stuff if i want. If there is that much trash i would suggest using a rake to do a rough clean up. I started keeping all good scrap metal too because it adds up $$$. Then you could try your 7x10. I would not worry about notching anything out at this time. If you don`t clean up or are still finding lots of trash after you did then the 4.5 is the one to use. Until you know your machine i would stick with factory settings.
