The Best Settings for hoard of coins (ONLY)?

marsias

New member
hello.

I wont to search ONLY hoards of coins(gold, silver, cooper).

What are the best settings (screen And audio) for my EXII ????

thanks in advantage.

A "hoard" of coins in either going to come up as a VERY big target or more likely, even iron. If it's buried in a can, for instance, and that can is a big rust pile. Or if it's buried by a foundation or structure. Honestly, I don't think there are any "settings" for you, other than digging EVERYTHING. Because a hoard of coins can come up as ANYTHING.

So the advice is this:

1) Go to a place where you think it's likely that there may be a hoard of coins around.

2) Set the ExII to IM -16 and the sensitivity to as high as it will go a remain stable.

3) Dig everything.

I'd add that you might be looking for either an iron box that would have a large footprint under the coil or it might be in a Mason Jar which might give off a silver signal (upper right) if it is mainly picking up just the lid.

Dig?

Hello.

Many thanks for you responses to all!!

He @Mike if i dig as you suggested everything, than i have a much work do to ???!!!

"For this work i thing i not need the Explorer with his excellent discrimination" but simply a all metal detector(without discrimination) which goes 5 m under the Ground???!!!!.

He @Steve: Primary i search for a hoard of gold coins !!! BUT i dont wont to discriminate out a hoard of silver !!!.

My interest is, if i locate a Hoard of Gold/silver coins WHAT is the expected screen/audio response ??? (I wont to discriminate from a hoard of IRON!!!). The response i think MUST be different or NOT ????.

Thank in advantage.

A metal detector cannot locate gold inside of an iron container. If the iron container is discriminated out then so are the gold or silver coins inside of the container. If a container has metal, such as a metal top on a jar filled with coins, then it depends on the discrimination. The jar may be rejected due to the metal top or could be detected with a mixed signal due to the metal top and silver or gold in the jar.

However, assume you are looking for gold or silver coins in a container that will allow detection of the coins and you want to reject iron so you don't need to dig so much. That can be done by most VLF detectors. Adjust the detector to just discriminate out iron and detect all other metals. That can be done with the Explorer at an iron mask setting of -15, -14, -13, somewhere in this area of rejection. I would most likely go with -15 or as you appear to consider all metal detecting at -16. You will be amazed at how much iron there is in the soil that you will detect if detecting all metals. If however that is what you want to do then you might consider the Minelab Advantage as that is a simple single frequency all metal detector that can be set to discrimination if needed.

HELLO Cody.

You explanation is simple and very good !!! thanks.

BUT another question is :how can i decide to dig or not to dig ??

Screens/Audio readings in this constellation (Iron container /gold/silver) must be very confusing !!?????

thanks again

At the classroom forum I have posts that explain how to use all metal and or duplicate an iron mask setting in the Smartfind screen and have ICONS to aid in the ID of trash targets including iron. Also, iron responds differently due to the magnetic properties of iron. As an example iron can be detected anywhere from a few inches to several feet away from the edge of a coil. Non-ferrous metals most often must be under the coil to be detected other than very large pieces of these metals. We can use pinpoint to measure the size of a targets. Another example is a dime will give a very small hit while a smashed aluminum can will give a large size hit. Also, coins and other gold and silver does not decay in the way other metals do. The stability of gold and silver mean they do not react with the soil minerals nearly as much as other metals. Take all this into consideration and gold and silver will give a reliable consistent indication if we sweep the coil from several directions. Trash metals will tend to give different sounds and digital reading if we sweep the coil from different directions.

You might keep this in mind. Gold and silver is not conductive based on size. A pound of gold or silver has no more conductivity than a dime or gold dollar. What changes with size is the conductance or how much current can be conducted. This is the same idea of how much current can a copper wire of different sizes conduct. The conductivity in general does not change for the different sizes but the number of electrons available to flow is increased if the size of the wire is increased.

You can detect a hoard of gold coins deeper because the conductance is greater. However they still with hit on the display at the same place and have the same digital reading as a single coin. Another example is silver hits at the upper right of the display with a reading in the 0/30, 1/30, 1/29 area no matter how much silver there is. A ton of silver would still hit in that area but could be detected to the maximum distance the coil will detect a metal target.

So, look for the gold coins at the same place on the display that a single coin hits. Use the ICONS, digital reading, crosshairs, and "tune" you hear. When I say tune it is the sounds we hear that we come to know is a dime or penny in conjunction with the other indicators.

Hello Cody.

Thanks for your excellent Tip.

-What are the expected digital readings for Gold Coins ??(ALL users talking about Silver/ copper/trash etc. readings).

As i read in many forums every user has another suggestion about IM mask, Audio, sensitivity etc. settings.

SIMPLE QUESTION FROM ME :

WHAT CAN I MISS, IF I HUNT IN IM-16 AND I DIG ONLY THE DIGITAL READINGS WITH FER< 10 AND CON>15.

ANOTHER THING: in mine Sellers-Manual about EXII, the seller says IF a trash item is closely together with gold or silver item the digital readings are only in EXII positive, against other detectors which give nothing or negative signal----- ITS is TRUE ??
