The best way to ground balance?...

Smithfire

New member
I manualy ground balance when coin shooting over ploughed land, re-balancing every so often or when I think the soil looks different.

Is this the best way to GB?. I remember hearing that you get a slight depth advantage from doing it manualy?

And I generaly GB with the sensitivity set at the number I'll be detecting at. Can anyone explain the thinking behind GB'ing with the sens at 0?

Many thanks

When the X-TERRA was initially introduced, I encouraged folks to lower the Sensitivity to about half way when they set the GB, so they didn't overdrive the detector to a point of chatter. Keep in mind that some folks had not detected before, and may not know the difference between the GB tone and chatter. If you are familiar with both, you really don't have to lower the Sensitivity to GB. On rough ground, if you have a 70 or 705, Tracking works best as it not only updates on the fly, the auto mode is able to "fine tune" the mineralization compensation better than we can using our ears in manual mode. On my 705 I run with an auto-ground balance offset toward the positive ground phase. I usually run in open fields with a positive ground balance of 3. This means I build a -3 into the auto GB offset program. In manual mode or on the 70, I lower the proper ground balance number by 3. How much I offset the GB depends on which detector I am using. Since the 70 and 705 have more adjustment settings to work with, you probably wouldn't want to raise or lower the 30, 305, 50 or 505 the full three clicks. But regardless, to offset the GB, properly ground balance your detector, use ALL Metal to make sure you're not over anything metal. Then after you get the proper ground balance, click the minus pad to offset the GB for a positive ground balance. I know that lowering the number may not make sense when you're wanting a more positive ground balance. But on the X-TERRA, lowering the ground balance number makes it hunt with a more positive ground phase and raising the ground balance number makes it hunt with a more negative ground phase. IMHO 95% of the time...just turn Tracking on
My Xt70 handles the ground changes beautifully

I think you'll get a whole host of answers to this question because everyone has their own method and there may or my not be an exact 100% right answer. But this is what works for me.

When I arrive at a location, this is what I do with my 705:

1. Press the AM "All Metal" Button
2. Noise cancel
3. Auto Ground Balance (Substitute manual ground balance if using a model that doesn't have auto ground balance)
4. Select Pattern 4 (This is my own personal pattern that I've setup that works well for me)

In my area most of the time I can run at full sensitivity but there have been times if it seems a little too noisy that I'll drop it down by 5 or so.

Digger, thanks for the detailed explanation on ground balancing, I sure will try out manually GBing, and then reducing 3 places further. Is this to get a small depth increase, or does it make the detector more stable?

I'm convinced that setting the ground phase more positive "fools" the detector in thinking the ground is more mineralized than it actually is. This, in my opinion, provides me an increase in both target depth and sensitivity. HH Randy

Aaaahhh....I see!

Does this affect some coil types more than others?. I've just started to use the 10.5" DD MF.

Again, many thanks for taking the time out to explain the theory.

Smithfire.

Hi Randy -- In the 705 instruction book it says to set the off set to a more positive value, to increase the off set #. I have to agree with you about setting the off set more negative to get a more positive result. I think that the book leads you down the wrong path and you may be getting less in results.

Also Barnacle Bill(by the way where is he??) told me once the reason to Manual GB before putting it into Auto Tracking GB is because if a person puts it into Auto Tracking GB right away there is a very fast GB that happens for a few seconds before going to the normal GB speed. This initial short duration of very fast GB may "time out" before the GB was finished, leaving with an unfinished GB at the start. After saying all that I do not follow that rule and I just put it in Auto Tracking GB right away from the start the same as Terra1959 does!
