The Garrett 1500 or the 2500?

Old Katz

New member
Today I could have used the sizing feature Garrett offers on the 2500 but I wonder
if the 1500 is just as good. What does the 2500 have the 1500 doesn't? Avice?

I think the only difference is the GTI 2500 has the All Metal Deepseeking mode and Fast Track Ground balance

2500 has all metal and a couple of other features. If you don't need all metal then the 1500 would serve you well.

I had the same question when I decided to buy a detector, besides the all metal mode and other "bells and whistles", both machines are closely identical. So with that in mind and the cost difference between machines, I bought the 1500. I have been pleased ever since

I think the 1500 is a tad lighter, too, being built on the GT- platform.

I made this decision last Fall. I went for the GTI 2500 for three reasons. One is the package they were offering with the 2500 was more attractive to me than the 1500 with nothing extra included. I like the new 2500 package that includes the sniper coil and Pro-Pointer a lot more. I bought both of those items later anyway. I got a 12.5 inch imaging coil that I do not use too much but I do use it and will probably use it more now that I have the Pro-Pointer. The second reason is I dislike the flat style buttons on the 1500. The third is True All Metal. Don't knock this as just another minor feature. It really makes the 2500 a good relic (large field) detector and also a fair prospector, I bet. Two detectors one box. I think the 2500 with accesories for $930 versus the 1500 with nothing for $680 is a no brainer. Both are heavy (my only complaint) but you will get used to that.

I personally dont know why they offer the "All Metal" function on only the 2500. I mean, how much of a marketing gimmick can it be? I'd think they'd sell more, across the board, if they put it on the others, too. Heck, Ive seen folk add triggers to their Garretts to get the feature.
I cannot think of many detectors I've had that didnt have it, from many different makers. I always considered it sort of a 'standard feature.'
SO what's up with that, Garrett?

I think they are hung up on ease of use and the turn-on-and-go theme. Ground balancing is alien to many and tough for some newbies to master.

I'll go along with that side of it, Bill. But what about but a simple non motion mode, keyed to the auto trac GB? Just add a button or trigger that sets the detector into pinpoint. It's how the others do it. I reckon if they can do it, GARRETT can surely do it.

Honestly, the GTA GTI and GTP series are very much the same just little different bells and whistles here and there. They are great machines but getting long in the tooth. Keep using the Garrett you have now, and wait for the new Flagship Garrett that will most likely be lighter and the most current circuitry design. I am still holding onto my Gtax-1250 until something new comes out from Garrett.
