The Garrett Pro Pointer

I'm thinking about getting the pro pointer....It seems to be popular with most folks ....whats your thoughts and experiences with it.....I guess I'm trying to justify the cost. because I have the give away from Kellyco already.....I'm not an impulse buyer anymore at my age ....lol.....thanks.......Dan

Dan----I don't think you can go wrong with the Garrett Pro Pointer.--My wife & I both own & use them and like them fine----They seem to be very durable & are just the right size for a pinpointer (IMO).---I did take some "Gaffers tape" and traced a circle on it with a quarter, cut it out & then applied it over the speaker area.---I prefer just the vibrator without the tone & this also keeps water & dirt out of the speaker area thus makeing it an "almost" water proof pinpointer.---I also took a white cap for the tip (end) of the probe--cut a little slot in it for the end of the "scraper" on the probe shaft & affixed this cap to the probe end.---This prevents wear on the tip end of the shaft--looks & more imprtantly works great.(something similar to the Sunray in-line probe caps).---As far as interference--the Pro Pointer operates at 12 khz (operateing frequency) & I havent had any "cross talk" (interference) between the Pro Pointer & my detectors when in use with the exception of my Etrac (on occasion) and a "noise cancel" takes care of that.---I have thought there would be "interference between the Pro Pointer & the Tesoro Compadre though because as I remember, the Compadre operates at 12 khz.-----Bottom line---Get one, you'll love it!!! :) -------Del

Thanks Del.......Good Info......hh.......Dan

Thanks Elton....There's plenty of good comments about it......hh........Dan

Hey Dan,

I had a Sunray DX1 on my DFX and I also carried a Merlin pinpointer for the small stuff. I got the LTD in January and decided to go without the Sunray to save the money but as the spring progressed the Merlin started getting weaker and weaker and the signal was either "all on" or I could only get about

Thanks Dave........Good Luck........HH

Let's put it this way, I had the Sunray on my F75 LTD and didn't like it (also had it on my F70 and wasn't thrilled with it). I sold it and bought the ProPointer, going forward I'll no longer be buying Sunray pinpointers

The biggest advantages of the Pro-pointer are that you can use it with any detector. (not brand specific like Sun-ray.) And you will find uses for it, where your detector won't go. I have actually shut the detector off, set it aside and searched under bleacher style seats build into a hillside, that were covered with metal.

That is very true..
I have the fx for my f70 and love it, but it is not made for the woods and will snag on everything. My propointer get more of a workout because i can use it with any detector i have.
If you have a dedicated detector that you use in open fields or parks then the Sunrays, "ROCK" but if you are going to swing in the brush then the propointer is the one to take.

Dan, that Kellyco giveaway is a giveaway for good reason.

The Pro-Pointer is well worth what it costs.

There's very little risk, use it once and keep it looking like new. If you don't like it, you won't have any problem selling it used on the classifieds here for $100-110.

The cost justification in buying is that a great pinpointer like the Pro-Pointer just plain makes this hobby a lot more fun.

Just pretend you're a bit younger and go with that impulse...:heh:

Another thing that's GREAT about the ProPointer is that it's a NON-motion detector, while the Sunray is a MOTION detector which is not fun to use when trying to dig in tree roots and the like.

Ok guys ,Thanks for all the great info.......I've decided to get it.......hh..........Dan

The FX-1 is non-motion in the F-75 pinpoint mode - motion only in descriminate mode.

Ralph (Sun Ray)

This is true. If the F70 or F75 had a locking pinpoint button/trigger (some machines do have this feature, seems perhaps they had the inline pinpointer in mind) it would definitely be very helpful.

Yeah, a locking pp trigger on the 75 would be helpful all right but I get along just fine with the Sunray in-line probe without it (locking pp).----In fact I have Sunray probes on every one of my detectors I can get 'em on.---I think they are just about the best thing since the electric light.----However, I carry & use them both (in-line & Pro Pointer).----If you think that's crazy---carry them both & give it a try for awhile--you will see what I mean.----They DEFINITELY have a "niche" when used in conjunction with each other.---At least for my style of hunting.----Isn't it neat to be able to make that worn out statement "for my style of hunting"?----Kinda "covers your butt", no matter what you're sayin! :)----In all seriousness though, they do work great together (only for different reasons).---You got the two best (albeit different) pinpointers on the market in use--BAR NONE.--JMHO----------Del

After several years of heavy use the on/off switch crapped out, if I can I may try and fuse the circuit and use it as a backup, tightening the battery cap to turn it off and on. I dont know if its possible to access it internally, it is realy packed in there well. I was lucky to find a new one near by and drove 25 miles one way to get it. After having used one I could never do without one. It really changes the recovery process. I (carefully) spray paint part of the shaft day glow orange as am very worried about loosing it in the woods. I see Garrett has a new model , maybe $50 bucks more with a lot longer handle but, I dont know if that is more a wand for body scans and has less directionality to it. I find sometimes you have to get that propointer in there pretty good and thats where if i dont want to, or shouldnt widen the hole, I stress my hand. A two inch extension on the handle would be better. I think it works very well! CO

Good news, Osgood! But I'd suggest not fusing the circuit or attempting any other repairs.

The Garrett Pro-Pointer has been out less than two years. Not sure of the exact month, I want to say it was late summer or fall of 2008.

The Pro Pointer has a 2 year warranty, so that means your Pro Pointer is still under warranty.

Garrett has great customer service, send your defective unit in and they'll take care of you. Wouldn't be surprised if they send you a brand new one out real fast.

Excellent point marcomo.-----Here's something else to consider also.----I thought the following was the case but was never completely certain about it so I called the Garrett factory and asked.----The two year warranty on the Pro Pointers are transferable to subsequent owners (2nd or 3rd owners) just the same way their detectors are.---So if you have a Pro Pointer that is in that 2 yr.warranty period---you are "good to go" as far as repair work (or replacement) on it is concerned (provideing it isn't damaged thru abuse).----You may have to prove purchase date (receipt) and again you might not, as they have records (S/N) on the Pro Pointer provideing the warranty card was sent in.---That S/N on the back of the handle for the battery cap wears off but there is a S/N "decal" inside the battery compartment itself also.---Don't tear the thing apart or start working on it yourself though or they (or any other manufacturer) aren't going to honor any warranty.----Like marcomo said--theres a good chance they will just replace it & send you a new Pro Pointer.-----That Pro Pointer is the best thing Garrett has ever done---you shut up RIGHT THERE Del!!!

i agree!..charlie got this right!..even changed that "puke" color green!..too!
