"yet to be determined".

I dug two old IH cents at an old homestead today. When I got home, I rinsed them both off with water. Even though they were dug within 30 - 35 feet from each other, you can see the HUGE difference in their condition.

The first picture is of the two coins side by side.

This picture is of the one in Good condition.

I wish all of them would come out of the ground like this!

This picture is of the one in Bad condition.

The reason I mentioned "yet to be determined" is because the nasty one is soaking in Olive Oil over night. It is badly worn and quite corroded. But when you get it in the light just right, the date is definitely an 187_something. It looks enough like 1877 that I'm keeping my fingers crossed! But realistically, it'll probably turn out to be an 1871. Regardless, I love digging old IH cents. And I'll let you know if it's an 1877, once I get some of the crud cleaned off. HH Randy

Nice find Randy...I have probably pulled out 30 IH's up here in New England and have yet to get one in very nice condition..Its all about the soil i guess. To many pine trees here! Just eats the copper really bad! Nice find Randy!!!! Em

Fantastic find Randy.

Randy,
I ditto what Bruce said and am still looking for my first IH. I have specifically patterned my 705 to hit on the TID's for IH Pennies that you have mentioned in the past but still dig mostly trash in spite of having found two silvers and a shield nickel in this particular park. I think that the old stuff is there and certainly would think that some IH's are lurking but they remain allusive.
Regards,
Chuck

Good finds BUT I wonder why such a HUGE difference in condition being so close together?

I found an IH penny in about 1975 with my Compass Judge 1 Automatic TR and it was in very good shape back as I still have it.
