The Omega Makes Coin Hunting Fun and Easy-The Streak Continues

RLOH

Well-known member
I have been hunting our county fairgrounds for three or four years and I have made some great finds, but the older finds are drying up for me. I hadn't been there for the last two weeks because the fair was going on. I am not much into finding loads of new coins so I leave the bulk of them for the detectorists who follow the local fairs and carnivals. I will pop a quarter which on the Omega is always a 89-90 signal or a dime. The fairgrounds are loaded with modern trash and old rusty nails so when I hunt there, I take a small section and hunt it thoroughly. Today I started out with my CZ and the first three coins I found were wheaties ranging from 4 to 8 inches. I love CZ's, but after swinging an Omega, they feel extremely nose heavy. When my arm got sore, I brought out the Omega which had the 5 inch coil on it. Since I had just hunted a 15 foot by 75 strip with the CZ, I decided to do an unscientific experiment. I rehunted the exact same area with the Omega 5 inch setup. Now for the unbelivable. The first signal I got was a 57 medium tone bouncing to 70. It pinpointed like a coin and showed four inches deep. This area has gravel under the grass as I think it use to be a parking area. After some digging or should I say chiseling, I saw a reddish nickle at about 5 inches deep. I knew immediately what it was. Another V nickle, a 1912 in good shape for my area, but in my agressive digging I nicked it. I started popping copper memorials from the 60's and 70's like the spot had never been detected. I ended up with 10 pennies, three dimes, 2 nickles, and 2 quarters and this was just hunting half of the area I hunted with the CZ. There was one more wheat penny in the mix. I have to say that finding an extremely trashy spot with a chance for an older coin is my favorite kind of detecting period! It is exciting to work that small coil around trash and be able to pick a nice coin out. Hunting a big sports field or grassy area of a park is OK, but it does get boring for me. Out of all the detectors and small coil setups that I have owned over they years, the Omega is as good as any. If anyone on the forum is thinking about getting the 5 inch dd, do yourself a favor and get it. You will not be disappointed. 5 inch coil, sens 90, disc 15, three tones, ground 55. R.L.

RL.Have you tried the same area with CZ using a 5" coil..I would be interested to know what you found with that set up too..

WTG RL. Funny, the last 2 v's I's dug came from an old fairgrounds. Just heard that my Omega is being "next dayed" to me either today or tomorrow. Looking forward to playing with the little rascal again. Keep the string going. HH jim tn

Jimbo, where have you been? So you are getting an Omega?
Hope to see ya @ the meeting tomorrow nite!!

Elton, I have a 5 inch coil for my CZ and to be honest, I find myself using the Omega more and more. I will take you up on that and give the 5 inch CZ coil a try. The Omega 5 inch looks exactly like the CZ 5 incher and I mean exactly, minus the sticker and it is a concentric. The little 5 inch dd coil is like picking steak out of your teeth with a toothpick. It is surgical. R.L.

All those F T 5" coils are "surgical," but like Cal Cobra has stated, it is like painting a 747 with a que tip. Don't get me wrong, I use the 5" coil a lot and they will really sneak through the trash and they truly have amazing depth. HH jim tn

:heh:LOL, that is a great analogy... and you don't miss a spot.

I have yet to use my 5" coil as I'm still going through my spot with the 11". I have already found some coins in iron with my Omega that my T2 missed (The most notable a small silver from 1800 and as big as your pinky fingernail). I know I am going to pull more coins from there with the 5" coil.

with any of the three coils in the 3-coil package, but that 5" DD is just impressive. And for those who question tiny-coil depth, the Omega w/5" DD will surprise them!

I trust you'll find more good stuff there.
