the purpose of the black cap on nicad battery pack

Battery Plus replaced my burnt out nicad pack with an NiMH (thanks for the idea, guys!). Looks like it will work good but I have yet to try it. I still have to replace the black cap on the battery back that was super-glued in. It looks like the function of that cap is to lock-in the battery pod cap and prevent it from sliding back and forth, and thus prevent O-ring movement, with pressure changes. Is this the case or is that cap just for cosmetics? The alkaline battery pack does not have a black cap so it appears to have some sort of deep water function. I never get beyond 30 feet with the detector anyways.

Hey Scott, What Mah Rating, does your new Nimh Batteries have, and let us know how many hours of maximum hunting time you get on a full charge. Also, what brand of Nimhs did Batteries-plus use in the refit, and how much did it cost you? What brand and model battery charger are you going to use to recharge the Nimh Batteries? Please keep us advised. HH,

ha, I don't know what type of batteries they plugged in there other than they were NIMHs. It may be on the order slip. Actually, I don't really care what the ratings are, as long as they last as long as the Nicads or longer. I do like that I don't have to worry about topping them off and getting a set in the battery. I'll post whatever info I have, when I have good info to post.

Was thinking about that black cap and I think it more protects the setscrews from back and forth movement, whihc might weaken threads over time. The cap is glued on both sides of the lid, which locks in in place more or less.

pack. On the older Excals before the cap you could swap out the battery pack, but some people were twisting the "O" ring or getting some grit on the "O" ring and the pack would leak. The water in the Pod would migrate through the cable to the circuit board and "zap"! The owner of the detector would send the unit in for warranty work when it really wasn't. So when Minelab changed the housing to what they have today they hot glue a piece of formed heat shrink tubing on to keep you out of the battery pod.
