The Simplest Iron Disc

I met an old timer recently who had solved the iron disc problem many years ago! He simply glued a small powerful magnet on the end of a wooden dowel. To use this high tech device, Push the stick into the sand (or Dirt) as close as you can to the target. If the target is iron, it sticks to the magnet. This is a great method for prospecting as tiny pieces of iron can be very hard to find.

Hi Dave,
I have been using this technique for years, but I mount the magnet on my digging pick. Unfortunately, many pieces of small iron get stuck in a dirt clod and even when using a very strong magnet they are hard to find since they will not jump to the magnet. Also, a person has to keep the magnet clean. A lot of black sand on the magnet seriously reduces the strength of the magnet.

The black sand is a pest and hard to get off the magnet. Just put a small sock around the magnet. Then just take it off when too much sand accumulates and the sand will fall to the ground. Thanks...joebody

baggy on mine, been doing this for several years and it saves on a lot of frustration cleaning the pesky black sand from a magnet when trying to remove the stuff from your gold wheel...Geo
