The start of the goldfish story

It is getting a bit longer than I planned but that is just the way it is I will add to it as I get the chance---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back when I was young and foolish, I liked ice fishing. I really did. I never had much fun ice fishing but I guess I just figured it was the thing to do during our long Michigan winter. I could not afford a shotgun for hunting and I didn

cold shanty with a huge RAT! lol! Ive always seen movies about ice fishing, but being from down here, never had a chance to go.
Ready for part 2
God Bless,

Sorry for these questions, but this is all interesting to me...we don't ice fish down here in South Texas. What keeps the stove from melting the ice? Is it hard to make the hole in the ice? How big is a Muskrat?
I remember the day that you could safely "hitch hike" a ride, very few perverts in society. I would have loved to have seen you when that Muskrat came through that hole! Was that the only time one came through the hole when you were fishing?
Why would you have to move the ice shanty if a Muskrat moved into it while you were not there? I would think you could chase them out of the ice shanty with a stick, right?
I really like this story, and sorry for all the questions. Thanks for sharing, and please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

Great story so far Royal.. Looking forward to the next installment
All the best

heck when I went in the service I was 6 ft and only weighed 140lbs. I was just 17 and had grown so fast that my weight just did not catch up.
I gained 20 lbs in boot camp and over 50 lbs in the three years I spent in the Marines.
I always figured I would be small. Now I wish I would just stop growing. Gained a hundred pounds

are nasty little suckers. I used to trap them to sell the fur but it was just for fun as the furs back then rarely brought more than a couple bucks.
If a rat found your shanty they would keep coming back and they used it for a home. They would dive to the bottom, dig up a bunch of lake weeds and I mean a lot of them and haul them into the shanty to eat...can crap. They can chew up anything and make a total mess, a stinking mess out of the shanty. You gotta kill them or move the shanty to get rid of them.
That was the only time I had one come up right in my face but it was impressive.. Scared the crap out of me.

I would think that if one attacked you, you could just kick it like a football, send it flying end over end...that would send him to muskrat heaven!
Why could you not put something over the hole to keep the muskrats out when you were not there?
For some reason, your story is really interesting to me. I remember reading a story in Outdoor Life about ice fishing when I was a boy...fascinated me. My only fear would be the ice melting or breaking while I was out on the ice and getting trapped under the ice. I hear tell that people even drive vehicles out on the ice.
I am really looking forward to your next part of this story, and I suspect that this story will stick with me for a long time, just like your frog story has stuck with me! Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

we made covers for the hole.
It is very easy to stomp a muskrat, much like it is very easy to stomp a snake but you don't want a dang snake in a shamty with you either. Especially when they come in, not expecting you to be there and raising all kinds of hell because they are scared. Lit my candle I will tell you.
When the lake is frozen you can drive a car on it and I have many times, when I was younger. I have also seen cars setting on the bottom while diving. I would not drive out there now, no other reason than I have nothing out there to drive to.
I have seen the ice 24 inches thick and you could land a bomber on it.
When it is very cold and the lake is making ice it is creepy to hear it cracking. It is not gonna break up but it is hard to convince yourself of that some times.
The hole in the shanty is a weak spot and I can remember setting in that black shanty and hearing it make ice. Lots of noise. I can remember one time that I heard a crack coming from far off. It kept getting louder and louder, they come fast and I saw the dang crack hit one side of the hole and keep going under the shanty and across the dang lake. Startled us but the ice was over a foot thick and we were in no danger.

lying under a tarp with your face over a 6 inch hole (we boys never had shacks ) and they pop up in yer face
Good story Royal! Waiting....

we sometimes had to deal with over 50 inches of ice! The handle on the ice auger sometimes barely long enough to get through, and occasionaly not!
Power augers were unknown to us, we were young, strong, determined and kinda dumb
We mostly fished for Lake Whitefish, and Walleye, Perch if we were desperate

we used ice spuds. When I first started diving there were places that so many of the things were sticking in the bottom that it looked like a dang forrest. It was common to have one slip through your frozen hands and dissappear into the depths.
I used to bring them home, after a dive but there are not many out there now.
I remember the first few times I went out we used a dang ax. Now they were not made for that.

you look to be in pretty dang good shape for an old fart!! For one hell of a lot of young brats too!! You do something right

The only ice fishing I ever did was when I lived in Northern Indiana in the 1980s.Some friends took me out on a fairly large frozen lake and it was crackin' and popping as the ice made. They didn't pay much attention to it but it scared the crap outta me!Looking forward to the next part!
