The Value of Good Headphones

Well-known member
I moved into a new home last this year and have been extremely busy and sick with a lingering illness. I just did not have time to build a new "test garden". Yesterday I finally got around to that task. I buried various coins between 4 and 8 inches. The ground has not settled, but I got ran my favorite detector(F5) through the garden. I first did this without my headphones and with my somewhat bad hearing, I could not hear the deeper silver coins at all. I was shocked at this because I have dug silver deeper than these buried coins. I put my original Ratphones on and repeated the test. I could hear every coin, but the deeper silver was the "whisper of a whine" that I have mentioned many times over the years. This "slight whine" is barely noticeable, but very distinct once you dig a couple of deeper coins. Anyone would miss these types of targets without phones or phones with limited audio. I also ran my other detector through the garden and this detector has a modulation on-off feature. I could not hear the deeper coins with the modulation on which really surprised me.

Years ago I was advised by Gene Scullion to get a pair of Killer Bee head phones. I took his advise and as you mentioned it makes a profound difference on the deep targets just inside the detectors range.

Don't be surprised in another 4 to 5 days if the coins buried deeper than 5" just disappears completely! I'v had five or six buried 5" and deeper in a test garden that were just fine for a few days, and then POOF! my brother had the
same thing happen to him. Its been a couple of years now and I still can't get a hit on them.

Same here, made a garden Penny,Nickel,Dime. all at 6'' and about 10'' apart. This was last year and I could not pick up anything on them- 3 different detectors-------Have not tried this year yet-----------------------after1------------------

Good headphones are critical for getting the maximum output from your detector, I've got the grey ghost ultimate which cost me around 160$ but I really feel I'm able to hear those faint deep signals with these headphones. Most of the silver we are finding now is below the 4" range, mostly 4" to 7" range which requires good headphones to hear those whispers.

I used to use a device called a Bluebird Depth Master made by White's that would enhance to sound/volume of deep targets while using a limiter on the maximum volume so shallow targets didn't blow your head off. I still have it today. I think some detector manufacturer's have incorporated this idea into current detectors for added depth. I still have mine and it works fine.
