Ok,who can explain to me why rocks work to the surface over time while coins settle deeper. Also do they settle faster in the north where there is more freezing and thawing.I have also heard a lot of people say that the frost brings coins up instead of deeper.Just curios what everyones opinions are hh jon

Hi John, probably lots of reasons for how deep an item is located. I'm not really sold on the SINKING theory except in extremely soft wet ground, but who knows...I've noticed that LAWNS a lot of times tend to BUILD UP over the years & some that were sidewalk level when I was a kid are now 3-4 inches higher. I think also that anything in the ground will affect the depth, like tree & bush roots. I even have found some wheaties in the area here laying on top of exposed roots that appear to have grown UP through the top layer of soil. Anything can affect the depth such as gardening,(putting in & takeing out) flower beds,Importing fill for leveling of a yard or building site. Build up of dead leaves & branches. sometimes sidewalks, driveways, foundations are laid & the dirt spread over the top of stuff already in the ground...In soft areas sometimes when wet & we walk across them we sink in the mud, pushing anything below our feet a little deeper...also something to think about...indoor plumbing...a lot of ground has been disturbed putting in water & drain pipes...it wasn't a LONG time ago that most people had no indoor plumbing...Not really theories, just my thoughts...Every time I dig something I subconciously look at the sidewall of my hole & what type stuff is over the top of my target...TT
