There was the usual bird nest or two in the small hay room in the horse shed....

[size=large]Some years all the little birds hatch, grow in the nest and fly away. Other years a snake, coon or possum will get them before that can happen... such is life. This year there was a new nest built on the shelf just above the old suede saddle. A small mother bird called a Brown Creeper had managed to hatch and raise her chicks, the only catch being a family of bumble bees sharing the right hand side of the nest~ seemed to work out all right. The girls would go down each day and look at the nest, take pictures, and watch the little birds grow. To make a long story short, the other chicks all grew up enough to leave the nest and fly away except for one runt who was left behind; ended up on the floor of the hay room. The mother hadn't come back. There was a snake around, not to mention our own cats, and the future of the little bird didn't look good. So about a week ago Hannah brought him to the house and started feeding him soaked dog food, which he gobbled down eagerly. He really was quite cute, about the size of a walnut; quite a little personality and spunk. Unfortunately he died this morning; Hannah was heart broke, she took him out and buried him. She spent most of the day drawing a picture of the bird from photos she had taken; Hannah drew this with a computer program.
Thanks for looking,
Vernon
