Theshold and Volume adjustments

I know there has been a recent ongoing discussion concerning the "proper" Threshold setting on the X-TERRA. One person even questioned the accuracy of a "quote" from the X-TERRA manual that says: When Threshold and Volume settings are used together, there is greater control over target audio response".

The Threshold and target audio are two entirely different tones. For the X-TERRA user to hear an accepted target, it must create an audio tone that is louder than the Threshold tone. In other words, if you have your Threshold turned up to a point that is louder than the audio response created by a specific target, you won't hear the target audio response of that target. I think we can agree that the audio response of targets will vary by depth and target size. So from a logical point of view, it makes sense to me that I would want to set the Threshold at a barely audible level, and the Volume turned up. As I've said many times, I run my Volume at max and make changes at the volume controls of my headphones. For those of you who think shallow targets or large targets provide an audio tone that is "too loud", use that headphone adjustment. Not the Volume control. By making the adjustment in your headphones, you will lower the Threshold audio and the Volume of the target signal proportionally. And this, to me, is representative of the Volume and Threshold working together.

For those of you who are not bored by the discussions we have here. And for those who have not "lost interest" yet, I stand by my ongoing suggestion that the proper Threshold setting is one that is just barely audible. A Threshold level that allows you to hear target blanking when sweeping over a target that has been "rejected". And one that is not so loud that you can't hear the target audio on a target that is "accepted". When you consider those two things, the "quote" from the X-TERRA manual makes sense.

So....

If I'm hunting in All Metal, I'd be better off to have the threshold set at 0?? (I don't need to hear "blanking" in All Metal.)

That should give me a touch more depth...right???

You are correct that you don't need to hear "blanking" in all metal mode. And it is true that you can obtain more depth with less filtering and processing of the received signal. However, running with a proper NC, proper GB and properly set Sensitivity are also important in obtaining max depth. All in all, sounds like you got a good grasp on it! HH Randy

I always run a Threshold of 3 or 4, even in all metal. There is no blanking in All Metal just target response and Threshold tone. I just reread the manual and believe it states that a little Thresh will boost a weak signal. For me it is so low volume of a sound that I do not really notice it in AM and yet I do notice it in the pattern modes. Of course I run in AM when I am in a trashed out home site and just crawling. I do agree completely with Diggers last post.

Just how I read it.

.....exactly how I run my 70 lads.......Sensitivity 30......2 tones.....auto noise cancel......auto GB tracking......

I run All Metal but get there via loading a pattern and opening it up again. The only segment I knock out is +48.
I find this reduces any large iron falsing giving my a high toned 'blip' ruining my sweep.

I have only been able to run at 30 Sensitivity like once. At most places I get far better results with less Sensitivity. Running the 6" DD I can often run 25 to 28, but with either the 5x10 DD or the 10.5 MF DD I have to turn it down to maybe 22 to 26. Rarely hotter than that.

.....I guess I'm just blessed. I've not had any land for a while that I haven't been able run 30........

My sensitivity is always at 30 and my volume is at max. I have never experienced the unstable chirping that can happen with too high of a sensitivity with this detector. My old Tesoro got unstable real quick with too much.
