Thin gold rings TID #'s?

Goldstrike

Well-known member
Here is a question for everyone that I've been meaning to ask for some time.
The thin gold rings that I have managed to detect have never been higher than 32 on my Safari. Has anyone detected a gold ring that came in higher than 32? The lower the karat of gold..the higher the alloy i.e. copper etc; it contains and so will tend to register higher T.I.D. number wise. Also, how did the ring sound in relation to how a clad or copper penny sound? What I'm really wondering is that am I missing some light weight, thin gold rings at say 33-34 mistaking them for a clad or copper penny? I find that sometimes, pennies can register 33 and then bounce up to 35-36 or even more depending on the chemicals/fertilisers and corrosion of the coin.
Feel free to comment and if anyone has found thin gold rings more than 31-32-33, and sounded like a penny, I'd like to know! Thanks in advance!

P.s. Like most of us, I pay way more attention to the sounds than the numbers BUT......if they sound like a penny, I'll be digging more 33+ numbers!!!

I have seen thin gold women's rings in air (and in dirt) at 6 and at 9. Never higher.

ime, in general, copper (ie lower karat) pushes the # higher, even into the 30s. Think mens class rings. Mass can do the same thing. Think mens class rings again. Nickel (eg, white gold) tends to counteract the copper content and push the # lower. also ime, 18k is always below nickels (the coin), usually cohabiting with foil.

I have never dug thin gold above 9 (or above 9 conductive on the CTX) tho admittedly I havent dug much gold. Yet!

((I really wish there was comprehensive trustworthy data on DUG gold that we could refer to instead of all these anecdotal stories and air tests))

Class rings 16 to 26,Thin woman's bands with diamonds 6 to 9 with 2 exceptions.I found a huge woman's wedding band with diamonds and rubies that read 18.I found a Norwegian puzzle ring at a 1804 church.I was hired by insurance company to find for a rich client that she said she lost it in 1922 on her wedding day I told her that it probably already been found since church was pounded by me and other detectors for last 40 years. She told me that it was pure gold and was several hundred years old.She knew general area that she lost it.I did not think I would have found it 4 inches down but I did.I set Safari at -5 to +7 for pure gold to hunt that is what gold nuggets I have come in at with 6X8.It locked on at +1 after about 20 holes mostly .22s.I charge 100 dollars just to show up for 2 hours and 50 dollars an hour after that.I doubt that rings gold value was 60 bucks melted.Insurance company said she was very happy.I do not think ring was pure gold maybe 22K my nuggets read minus numbers.I rarely hunt any lower than 6 and block out 9,10,11 I hate 22 shells. No I could not figure out how to put ring back together again it looked like a wad of brass wire if I was not told in advance what it might look like I think I would have thrown in junk pouch.

Yeah...Gold is a cruel mistress alright...What else would get a guy up at 4am for another long tough slog with no promise of success?

that big 24k BHLandstar got that hit like a Quarter, and that 24k that CZconnoseur just got this month hit like a dime...Mens gold class rings hit like a zinc..White gold even of a large mass hit lower than yellow gold of smaller sizes even...Thinking back, I do not think I've ever 'called it' on any of my gold finds before the dig..so I gave up trying to figure it out and work likely locations for as many targets as fast as possible.....This may give you an idea of a few items I have laying around...the TIDS are off my F70, but you may be able to extrapolate them to cross over using the nickel as a reference point? Let us know if you figure this out...

All great comments! I think we all learn, especially myself from all your posted comments and until the metal detector manufacturer's come out with a more refined or a dedicated gold only (yeah right)!!! lol detector, I for one will continue to listen very carefully to the individual sounds/tones and yes, numbers as well and will continue to dig hoping that it's gold again.
Hope you all have a great day and have fun detecting!:clapping:

Just to let you know ring time is next week.I find over half of my gold rings and Jewlrey at 4th of July grounds I have 7 towns lined up already not uncommon to find wallets, watches, cell phones etc.also.Plus a tone of clad. The best part I do not have to dig so they let me in almost at every location I ask to hunt.

That's right!! July 4th is perhaps the most productive time for fresh drops! With my busy schedule recently, I hadn't thought about it!......so just like you, I need to start planning now to hit the parks hard! Looking forward to seeing everyone's finds!!!......It's gonna be awesome!!!
