Thinking of getting another metal detector.

Have a DFX and was thinking of getting the Minelab Explorer. Is there anyone out there that has both that can tell me where they would prefer to use one over the other.

I had an XLT for many years. It of course is different from the DFX but more similar than different. The Explorer is by far a superior detector over my old XLT. They are similar in adjustment and function but the Explorer clearly does its job better. The difference is performance. It was always confusing with the XLT whether my adjustments were helping. With the Explorer you see an immediate change in behavior. So you get feedback to tell if you are doing things right or not.

As soon as I lift one edge of the coil off the ground the background tone changes so I know I have done something wrong. It also means it tracks the ground so close a change makes a difference. With the XLT I didn't know if it was working or not.

I find more coins and relics than I ever have. The big difference is performance.

I also recommend KellyCo for the purchase. Their prices are lower than anyone else and Minelab makes the detectors not KellyCo. They sell so many they have it in stock and can ship the same or next day. I called one time to ask about coils and the girl said "whats a coil" but I figure I use it and Minelab makes it and what does it matter if the person who takes my money knows what they sold me.

Mine is the best detector I have ever had.

Joe.

I will sum it up like this. I have had, and used both Detectors for a year. The DFX was my back up after a while. The DFX is a great machine up to 6 inches in normal ground conditions. I have tweaked it using the Deep Silver Program / DSM Program, but it just doesn't ID a target as deep as the Mine Lab Explorer II does. Sure, It will tell you a target's there, but past 6 inches, everything you dig is a crap-shoot. The Mine Lab Explorer II will give that faint sweet signal of silver at 6-10 inches that will send an experienced Explorer II user into a frenzy. The Explorer II is allot better in mineralized ground. I have Experienced this first hand with my friends, who all now swing an Explorer II. The DFX couldn't pick up a coin at 8 inches in mineralized ground where I could hear the Explorer's sweet high pitch screaming at me. Take it from someone who has used both. The Mine Lab Explorer II is the better machine hands down.
Hope this helps.

I went from a cL IDX to an Explorer II so I can't really tell you the diff. Between them but I can tell you the Explorer II is GREAT, the best ever, hands down as they say, I'm not kidding, I was amazed at the depth this machine has, not to mention ID accuracy and such easy pinpointing, get a test unit or test it from a dealer you won't regret it if you buy it, all of us from the Explorer forum can't be wrong. I'd recommend you to buy from Kellyco for the 'free' 8" coil, rain and dust cover, Minelab ESP (Extended Service Plan) 2 Year Additional Extended Warranty, minelab carry bag, & Minelab tool belt. All the other stuff they offer is CRAP. The other website I HIGHLY recommend is Ron Duggers website (I bought my Explorer II w/X-1 Probe from there) http://www.discountdetectors.com, they have great offers on the Explorer II and will get you free shipping too only that they offer complete free shippingunlike Kellyco who want shipping from the 'free' items paid.

whites has bought the minelab rights to its tech for the dfx . if i didint word that right put it this way minelab gets cash from whites AND YES ITS TRUE TO ALL THE FORUM REGULARS.

I had bought an explorer xs about 4 years ago. It is the best coin/relic machine on the market! I have owned Whites,Garrett, fisher, and discovery. Although it takes a lot of time out detecting to master this machine, its worth it.What I ended up doing is putting it on learn mode and one by one passing all of the coins I'm more likely to find in front of the coil, and then it eliminates most of what you do not want to find. It works with anything you want to find with the exception of raw gold.
