There is some extreme high/low tides going on starting about now, so a few of us wondered if it might work on the remains of a beach cut that had started last April. I went down for a bit this morning and got my 12th gold coin. This is my 2nd of the $1 denomination size.

The back (date-side) of this was made into a love token, but I'm still going to count it in my "gold coin" category, and not jewelry category

a) It was found in amongst other age indicators showing that 1800s stuff was present in the strata: suspender clip, skeleton key, barber dime and other, as-yet, unknown silver coin, some wheaties, etc...

b) "love token" was a popular thing to do with coins WAY-back-when. Ie.: you never seen these done on coins after seateds, for instance, as far as I know.

c) You can see on this "before" pix that there is some superficial discoloration type stuff. Although gold (like rings and stuff) always comes out shiny (as opposed to silver, copper, etc... which corrodes), gold too can get discolored if it's been in nasty enough minerals, for a long enough time. It's rare, but it can happen. So the fact that this didn't come out shiny, tell me it's been there since circulation times, to have allowed it get this on there.

So based on those 3 age confirmations, this one's going in my coin category, as a numismatic loss of that period. Although the date side is not visible, this particular type was only made from 1856 to 1889.

For those that don't know "love tokens" made out of coins, were items that, for instance, a soldier would make for his sweetheart, as jewelry. This one has not only been made into a love token, but also has 2 tiny holes drilled. The 2nd of the two holes still, in this before-pix, has sand grains or whatever in there. Tomorrow I'll use some gentle sponge & ezest work, and post an after-shot.----------
