took the later version of my working EXP XS and made it into an underwater detector. The headphones are not waterproof.
This chest mount allows a clear vision of what the screen says. IN MY PART OF THE WORLD, I use the screen and the audio id with a relative accurate result. This is why I like to be able to see the screen. Chest mounting the Explorer control box also allows me to basically use any battery power source without weight being criteria.
The gel cell alternative for me is a quick and easy to charge and a sealed unit that is easy to mount onto this configuration. It's also an awesome land based detection system. I really like Beachcombers effort on how he made what was basically a clear see through control box for the Explorer electronics and Charles and Paul have made their versions to suit, but this later version, based on one of my original conversions, allows the display to be basically in your face without the need of having to look down at the display if it is say under water and you aren’t.
I have made the cable form the detector to the search stem very strong by incorporating some nylon webbing as part of it’s assembly for control box to search stem. Secret to having any cable coming form the search stem is for it to be just the right length and maybe self retracting(coil or other)or you’ll get all sorts of trouble.
If I ever wanted to, I could easily make a thumb control and on the search stem to control all plus more on much like the original layout of the Explorer. This is another version that I am working on, but I opted for what I considered the most used and necessary controls, one that lets you switch on or off IRON MASK or switch on or off PINPOINT from using my thumb and still able to be activated from the control panel if needed.
Like it is it allows me to keep one hand free to hold my digging tool or a glass of chardonnay or stubby of beer. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Most of the control box is still original with the addition of a four way (PINPOINT, IRON MASK and SPARE and a two way connector for power "+" and "-".
The coil connector is still in it's original position. The control box gets locked into place with it's original cam lock onto a stub made from a piece the original Explorer aluminum upper shaft.
Made a mould that allowed the clear plastic cover to basically fit almost perfectly over the Explorers control panel and seal off the control box join.(with a little bit silicone sealant).
Made my own version of a 15 inch WOT coil search stem. Aluminum/stainless tube/f/glass and plastic. Light weight for me and very strong.
There are lots of other possibilities but I just made what I thought was the easiest so I can get on with the business of detecting.
