Threaded Connectors vs Plug Ins.

Mike Hillis

Well-known member
I've had two F5's, one with the plug in style connector and one with threaded nut connector. I eventually sold the plug in style and kept the threaded one mostly because it was the newest version and it had threaded connectors which meant the the coils would be more interchangable. But now I find myself missing the plug in style when I'm carrying extra coils into the field for quick change outs. I struggle with the threaded connector nut a little. Anybody made a tool to help with the nut?

Mike,

I am like you, I had both the plug in and screw in type units and basically kept the screw in detectors. My reason was not that the plug could come disconnected but that there were more screw in type connector coils on the market.

When I change coils, I don't tighten the screw down. I do not even screw it in "snug". I only turn it a couple of times and never had a problem unscrewing or even a connection problem.

A note for some of the plug in type detectors in the First Texas "Fisher" and "Teknetics" lines; I think there are really some good deals out there as I have noticed the plug in units have less of a resell value. Some folks may think it is a "Bounty Hunter" related issue also.

I use a little strip of stretchy rubberized tape around the nut makes it much easier to grip. The F5 is pretty tight quarters for old arthritic fingers like mine.

I have 2 F-5 detectors, one push in, one screw in coil connectors, complete sets of coils on stems for each, would never consider selling ether of them.

I hate the screw in connector it's a real pain to use on the F4.:ranting: I change coils often and I have gotten to the point that I don't even bother screwing them down tight, I just push them in and go, never had one come loose doing that.

I much prefer the older push in style.

Guess I hit a nerve. Oh, well I'll stay out of this one!

Those are good ideas, guys! Never thought about just plugging the coil in and not tightening the nut, or putting something on the nut. I was thinking about a little rubberized wrench, but I now I think I'll try those ideas first.

Thanks
HH
