THRESHOLD HELP THANK YOU !!!!!

Nearly a week ago I mentioned something about poor depth in another topic started by Jack Flynn and many gave advice about threshold and machine start up at a new site. I finally got out today for a little bit and that help was huge.

I ran my threshold between 0 and 3 big diff, and even I can hear the slight hum at 3 with headphones on. I started up in all metal, set noise channel, turned sensitivity to 7or 8 to GB and WOW what a huge difference. I must have been balancing out a lot of targets because there are about three times as many targets as there were at a house I already have been at for about 6 hours previously. My ground balance number was way way higher than I was getting before. Mid 50's instead of mid 20's. The more I learn the more I realise I do not know!!

THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED

Changing the Threshold should have no effect on the Ground Balance. That suggests you have trouble Ground Balancing correctly. An easy solution is to turn the Automatic Ground Tracking On and let the detector ground balance by simply walking around(detecting). Every couple of minutes while detecting push the Ground Balance button and watch the GB numbers change as the detector Tracking circuit continuously updates the Ground Balance setting. Once you obtain enough measurements from the detector you will have a good idea of what the Ground Balance range SHOULD be. For example if you see the readings range between 30 to 36 then you now have a reference point. At this point you can practice either Automatically or Manually Ground Balancing and should end up with a number between 30 to 36. Or just leave Tracking On and let the detector do the work.

Well yeah,
BarnacleBill, I believe that I was ground balancing incorrectly. Which doesn't mean that I'm still not (snicker). I did the GB in AM with the sens. set in the high single digits, Re swept the area I balanced in and then repeated the process and got consistent numbers. All after setting noise cancel.
When I used auto tracking in the yard I got mixed results (I think?). I had GB numbers that swing from the teens to the mid thirties and averaged in the mid twenty's. My second time there I cleaned out a spot (2 x 2) real good then GB in auto and got numbers in the 50's and thought I did something wrong. I am still learning and this is kinda humbling for me. There was a patch that went real well in auto track though.
The largest areas I have found in the yard and drive without a signal is about 5' x 5' I think that the sheer volume of metal in the ground would have a negative affect on GB, wouldn't it? Otherwise I would have to go way out into the field in foot and a half tall grass and wouldn't that be too far from my workings?
In the small side yard and Small back yard I have picked out more than 75 but not 100 yet, modern coins. I have picked up 5 or 6 wheats from the 50's . Also gotten a few Quarters, Dimes, and Nickles the earliest being 1965. The majority were less than three inches. The deepest coins have been in the 3" - 4" range and that was my last time out with the new settings. Many came out of holes with nails. 1 hole had 4 pennies and 1 dime with 4 or 5 nails. Now I wish I had kept everything from this house separated from the rest of my treasure, and not tossed the nails pull tabs and bottle caps. I think I will in the future as I am not done there.
The two yards are Maybe 20' x 40' and the yard is less than 30% hunted (estimated I don't carry a rolotape in my backpack) less if you consider depth. I've dug a bunch of Farm Junk and no swing is with out numerous negative hits in all metal.
It can be maddening passing on a beep. However, I have been able, in some cases, to pick up a coin based on the TID in pin point. I would get a good hit in pattern 1 then get negatives in pinpoint. Here is the thing though when I watch the TID (pinpoint) it will be -4 with audio then 36 and no audio then -6 with audio. After working that spot real thoroughly i would find the middle and get a good signal with audio from between and under two nails Either that or I just dug a BIG Nail. Its gone both ways so far and I think I am getting better at deciphering the code and that seems to require digging Junk which is cool.
I dug my first pocket Knife yesterday, the blades were just packed rust by now but the nickle bolsters did hit in the 6 to 8 range I believe.

All in all I am getting better I think.

Any thoughts on whether there can be too much junk in the ground to use auto tracking?

I hope all that makes sense and adds a little clarity... BTW that is a thirties era house and was a single family residence.

I hunt in parks with alot of trash
I prefer to set my gb on clean ground
and not let it track it.
Then when i hit a clean patch i check my gb.
