Tips for discriminating bobbie pins from gold chains?

Anyone have any advise as how to distinguish bobbie pins from small gold chains? Last water hunt I dug at least 30 bobbie pins hoping to get a chain. I did find 3 junk chains. Still in quest of a nice chain or small thin gold ring. I have found 2 silver & gold rings. Any help would be appreciated.I thought the water hunting booksI read talked about narrow small sounds for gold jewelry.

I am using the detector pro head hunter PI machine.

the pulse delay is 15 us head hunter
too, for very thin chains
be better on 10 us

Here is an extract from instruction manual for HEADHUNTER PULSE (PI) detector:
"FREQ (Frequency) Control
This is a very unique control that is able to re-tune the
sensitivity of the HEADHUNTER PULSE (PI) detector to be
responsive to selected metals with out losing its depth
toward the selected metal. Unlike other PI detectors,
turning the frequency control back from the higher
frequency position will not result in a loss of depth for the
detector.
In its more clockwise positions, the detector will be tuned
most sensitive toward low conductive metals such as smallgold jewelry.
As one rotates the control, the detector retunes
itself toward different metals
