Tips for the Ace 250

Aaron

Well-known member
My cousin bought a Ace 250 a few years ago when I tried to get him into the hobby but he lost interest quickly and it just sat in his basement, still basically brand new. I asked him if I could borrow it because Ive been wanting to get a backup machine. I was very surprised at how well the Ace works even with its small stock coil. I like it so much I'm going to buy it off him and I have ordered the bigger 9 x 12 coil. I've been hunting in a park thats been producing alot of coins and some silver too but I am wondering if I can get some tips on finding gold rings. I am hunting in the coin and jewelry program and dig all the pulltabs. I heard a guy on YouTube named "Crackbadger" say how much he loves the Ace and if it says foil it is foil, however I havent found this to be true in my case. I am wondering what kind of sounds do gold rings make, I realize it is a low tone but does it much or lock on? Been detecting on and off since '86 and still looking for my first gold, yeah I know thats pretty sad but now I'm keeping my disc lower and digging alot more junk!
Thanks for the help!

Gold and foil have the same conductivity. Pass up foil and one of them could be a ring. The archives on this forum are loaded with tips on the 250. Check them out.

Gold rings invariably hit in the midrange. There is no special tone that they make, at least not on the Ace. You will find that the majority of them hit with the middle tone. They do generally give a solid response, though.
Most are concentrated in the lower end of the middle ID range, from foil through pulltab. On the Ace, this would mean accepting the notch below nickle up to the cent range. Think of the nickle as the hinge or "pivot" point.

If you are really serious about digging a gold ring, reject either end of the scale. This means iron and all coins above zinc cents.
