To Dig or Not to Dig....

(I posted this one on the ID Excel forum, but I'd like to get feedback from you C$ users as well. BTW...glad to be amongst you guys!)
....Now that's the question. I'm sure some of you folks will have some feedback on this one.
Lets say you get a good solid repeatable signal from one direction, but nothing the other direction?
Lets say you get a good solid repeatable with a very small left to right swing, but if you swing slightly off target, you get negative/iron readings. Now what if this target pinpoints LARGE? What if its SMALL?
What about the signals that bounce all around in all positive numbers, never goes negative, but won't settle on any number?
What about bouncing in the low 30s, but every couple of swings hits on 36?
What about the "It'll be a pull tab, but maybe a nickel".
What about other scenarios? How do you decide to dig or not?????
Dive in on this one folks!

I have found too many silver coins as well as a few hammered silver that signal as trash. However, if you hunt parks and really trashy areas good luck! I can sometimes tell the difference between a coin and a pulltab even though they both read as trash, the coins sometimes have a slightly stronger tone. HH, Mike

If it's positive and repeats, I dig it. You have to be careful with the pos & neg signal in the same sweep. I wouldn't walk away from it. MANY times I have gotten a silver coin out of a hole that had iron in it. Once I got a Merc dime out of a hole with an axe head. Remember...your machine is capable of seeing through trash. It may be doing EXACTLY what you want it to do, so I say dig. If it turns out to be junk...SO WHAT? WHO CARES? This is metal detecting...we WILL dig some junk. As far as pulltabs go...That's what I look for when I hunt. That way I know I'm not passing up the nickels, gold, buttons, IH pennies....and so on. LOTS of great targets ring up as a pull tab. As for something in the 30's....dig like a Mad-Man!

I don't have much else to add to whats already been said. But my rule of thumb for jumpy numbers is, Dig anything that stays positive. Really deep stuff, odd shaped stuff, or coins on edge are all factors in "jumpy" signals. Like the other guys said, when in doubt just dig it out. Most of us dug alotta iron & stuff when we first got the C$, but now I rarely do. Diggin' some trash at the beginning helped us all learn what the C$/Excel was telling us. Usually those 1 direction signals are junk. Coins most always will repeat from every direction. But next time ya get one, just check & see. Then you'll know for next time....HH, Bill

"As for something in the 30's....dig like a Mad-Man" You made my day with that line Tony! Its -10 degrees this morning so I won't be out MD for another month or two, but I'm going to check those pull tab ID's a lot closer. HH, Ernie
