To dig or not to dig

Seems to me after reading many of these post and using many different settings and the iffy signals you pretty much have to dig everything.

Exactly...in order to find everything because so many variables affect the way the detector "sees" the target...soil matrix, moisture content, target orientation, depth, etc. Sticking strictly to target ID will cause you to miss a lot. However, the Explorer will allow you to "pick" through trash to find coins that will ID properly. Take care, Ray.

You may have missed Charles' great post on how to know what to dig or not. His suggestions are right on the mark and it is easy to cut down on digging trash targets. Iffy hits are in the ears of the user so an iffy hit to me may well be a good hit to another. I think that is where we get as our experience increases with the machine. Sounds that use to be an iffy hit are now music to my ears since I know it is most likely a deep dime that is on edge. This is a wild guess but I would guess experienced users dig no more than one out of 20 hits and yet find the most coins.
