To ERIC- I'm getting Pi frustrated!

Hello, I have tried the Tesoro Sandshark pi and the Newforce CS6Pi. I live inS.W. Florida=no mineralization. In both cases my CZ20 vlf went deeper than either pi machine by at least an inch or 2. I have read that mineralization actually increases a pi's depth,. Is that true? I cant afford a DEEPSTAR OR AQUASTAR right now to compare to my Fisher CZ20. Is there any pi machine likely to outperform my CZ20 by at least 2-3 inches? Any less depth increase and I wouldnt sacrifice the cz20's 3 tones or Disc. What do you think of Fisher's IMPULSE? Thankyou very much. Chuck PS> MAYBE by next year I can move up to an AQUASTAR !!

Hi Chuck,
I don't know of anything between the detectors you mention and the Deepstar and Aquastar. These latter two were designed to give the maximum possible depth to which the majority of detectorists are prepared to dig. I have done even deeper models, but only to special order. You then have to sign an agreement not to sue for back injury
The Impulse is good but its lack of auto-tuning make is a minus point on the wet sand or in shallow water. Very good battery life, but most say that they would have prefered a bit more performance.
Wet, conductive beach sand can improve the range with PI detectors in some circumstances. You can even get better range than for an air test.

Hmmmm...I thought you designed the CS6PI. If so, is it a high frequency, lower power unit like the deepstar and aquastar or is it a lower frequency unit not getting the depth of your current models? Also, would a unit for diving or boat tow not be a candidate for auto tune?
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,
Yes, I did design the CS6PI which is a high frequency, low power unit. At the shortest pulse delay it transmits about 7000 pulses per sec. To keep the current drain small, the pulses are of low amplitude, about 0.2A peak. Total battery drain is about 65mA. Because of the low TX current, the coil can have more turns and has an inductance of 1mH. The greater number of turns makes up somewhat for the lack of current in the TX and also gives more coupling to the object signal. By contrast, the Aquastar and Deepstar transmit 10x more peak current at 3000 pulses per sec. Current draw from the battery is 450 and 500 mA respectively. Coil inductance has to come down to 200

Hey Eric, are those Super Deepstars you're talking about similar to the "Beachburner" you've talked about before? What's involved in retrofitting the standard Deepstar to a Super Deepstar, short of bigger, heavier batteries? Do you have to use a higher power output transister? Are there coil changes also?
Does the coil heat the sand?
Yesterday I noticed that the Deepstar keeps my belly warm when running at high-power (I keep it in a fannypack located at gut-level in front). Will this cause sterility? Just kidding

What an interesting post. Thanks again for your response.
Take care,
Charles

Hi Jeff,
A standard Deepstar requires quite a bit of modification to make it into a Super Deepstar. The power transistor is the same, but it needs considerably more heat sinking. There is an additional 24V volt regulator and a 4W damping resistor, all of which get hot and are heat sunk to the aluminium case. A few other mods and additions are needed, so it is definitely a "back to base" job. The additional external battery plugs into whichever coil socket you don't use.
Search coils are the same. Don't know about sterility, but it is not adviseable to put your head inside the coil when running at high power. Tends to erase the memory
