Practice practice and practice. I went for a quick hunt after work to a high school where I knew there would be lots of coins. I used mostly a screwdriver to pop those coins out of the ground. Digging no holes saves lots of time getting my over all coin count up! Heck, even got a nice silver religious medallion :)
