Today I'm getting my NEW Ace 250, and I'm like a kid that can't wait.

I ordered the additional 9x12 coil with it also.
but I have a question maybe someone can answer.
Does the 9x12 come with a coil cover?
I posted earlier about using coil covers and I figured I always have up
to now, so I may as well continue.
When running the coil up?
Do I run it straight up to the first lock then wind it?
Or do I wind it right from the coil?
Really hope I like my new toy..

You usually have to purchase the coil covers separately. It depends on the deal you worked out with your supplier.

I run the cable straight up the shaft about a foot, holding it in place with a couple of Velcro straps, and then wind the rest of the coil around the shaft up to the control box. I don't think it's totally necessary, so long as your cable isn't flopping around, it should be fine.

Congrats on the new machine. The anticipation is terrible, isn't it?

Congratulations on the 250! When you watch the DVD it will tell you to start out in the all metal mode. I have to disagree with that thinking. I believe you should start out in the coin mode. Then graduate to the jewelry mode. Set the sensitivity to 4 or 5 bars to start with.

I never use it.

I"m with you. I don't think the technical writers that put those manuals together ever used the detector. They certainly didn't know how to describe how to pinpoint. Me and John had to do that about a thousand times.

Yeah starting a newbie off in that mode is the quickest way I know of to drive them out of the hobby. I often wonder if the people at Garrett who put out this info actually remember how stupid they were when they picked up a detector for the very first time. I know I didn't know one end of one from the other and I didn't have the easy ones to learn on and no internet for instant info.

You don't really need a cover unless you're going to use your detector as a club. Run the cable straight up the shaft for about a foot and tape it, use velcro, or nylon electrical ties.

Let a newbie dig a ton of rust nails and tabs and that detector will be wrapped around a tree. Heck I think when you start out run in the coin mode and notch out the nickel also. Now the newbie will be happy!
