Today's Etrac Findings

Took it out with the 5 inch coil into a newer spot this AM, ran in coin mode and conductive.. Auto sens still wants me to run at 14, not sure why that is it does it in the iron and even in clear ground.. but I get no depth at all in auto so forced into manual at 22.
Anyway I managed to find a 57 dime and a couple wheat pennies, still had to hunt slow in the iron, after getting a digable target I would sweep fast and at most get a false sounding signal... When I got home I headed across the street and tried the X8, now the X8 makes it about as stable as I have had it.. my good old X8 coil.. newer ones don't seem as stable.. anyway this time I adjusted the coin mode and opened up a bit more bottom right down to about the 22 ferrous area, and closed up the top a hair on the 1-36-39 line as I am getting a lot of rusty tin cans lids and can rings hitting up there.. anyway right away I get a solid 20-46 reading and it pretty much remained there even opening up the quick mask screen, sounded very deep, but was only maybe 6 inches, but did end up being a 1827 large cent.. I didn't think of trying to switch to coin mode, I should have but wasnt expecting a coin at that reading, but I don't think it would have come in on the coin program.. seemed to be pretty stable with not too much iron falsing, but did dig a couple solid button piece of flat iron bouncing around the screen.. think it will be usable with this pattern..
But again we are forced forced into using one, in a high trash area.. anyway I hunted the iron slow, and found 4 wheats and some clad.. the ring I got last target just as it was getting too dark to see.. dug a few bullets and shot gun shells, just dug all the signals that came in solid.. One thing I notice is all the targets sound pretty much the same as far as volume, deep and shallow all sound deeper too me than they end up being.. my gain at factory 24. Oh yeah, wait till you get over a aluminum can top.. talk about a sweet signal... you need to be in sizing pinpoint or they will pinpoint down to a dime size.. Not shown is the bag o trash, and clad... Although surprisingly again I am getting very few pulltabs, I am geting signals from them when I see them on teh ground, but have only dug a few.. have yet to find a nickle... they reading different than air tests?

Nice finds!!!! You must have some really bad ground up there as the recommended Sensitivity that your machine wants to run is by a large margin the lowest that anyone has posted so far!!!! Maybe when some other people in your area get an E-Trac you can compare notes to see if theirs does the same. If not maybe there is something wrong with your machine. Down here it is recommending 20-22 which seems to be around where most peoples have been recommending so far. Still you made some nice finds today!!!! WTG!!!!

He is most likely right. Mine ET was down to 10 on recommended sens. in my backyard. This is a one big dump. Previous owner possible did throw all trash out the window. Lazy bum. House was build in 1960's so I don't expect anything "aged" but honestly every square foot has at last one junk target.

Actually some housing projects from back in the 1960's were actually built on old dump sites. It can definitely cause problems. Where I grew up part of the town was built over an old dump.

Hey Jim,

As anyone who has read this and other forums over the years can attest, the Auto/Manual sensitivity debate has been a lively one. Many have stated it would be nice to know where the machine is really running at in Auto and I guess on the E-trac we now know. Someone was listening.

Gut feeling was that high trash and EMI would drive the sensitivity real low in Auto, is this what you are seeing? Also sounds like they added a few settings that changes the algorithm in Auto on how quickly it responds to changing conditions, can't remember what it is called. My experience with the XS is that the sensitivity could go quite low in Auto in trashy ground, seemed like it took a long time to come back outside of the trash. Maybe this will be better. At least you can see what is going on.

Does the "recommended" sensivity reading vary quickly and by quite a bit as you go from trashy to non-trashy area?

Not sure, every time I look at it its at 14.. but didnt keep an eye on it to watch it changing... hard enough to be trying to read the numbers on every hit.. I still have the plastic shield over the face and a cover on it... dont want to take the protective sheet off till I decide if I am keeping it, might be part of my prob seeing screen.. of course I didnt adjust contrast yet either... been busy adjusting patterns and switching from mode to mode and forgot about trying the contrast setting...

and butons being all different I imagine they will be all over the cond scale depending on make up and size.. I will take a few readings on various Military and civillian buttons of common sizes if you want in the next few days

The lowest I've seen so far is 18 and the higest I've seen is 23. In the past I've used manual sensitivity set between 24 and 26 in the same locations.
