Today's finds.

Hi Angela, nice to meet you and looks like the Quattro works very well for you. I noticed your Avatar and I assume that is you on a beach. Is most of your detecting done on beaches ? Also I don't know if you have ever used the Explorer II but if you have does the Quattro have the same flutey tones as it's big brother ? Ok Angela I sure thank you and have fun down under looking for those coins. God Bless ya.

Hello Wirechief,
Nice to hear from you too. Even though my avatar is of me beach hunting, I actually do more hunting on old gold fields, because I live there. But I love going to the beach as often as I can, and I'm hoping to do some underwater detecting soon, after I've bought an Excalabar. I've been using the Quattro for over a year now, it's paid for itself too. I really love my machine, because I find it's suited to all types of hunting, and though it's not a gold machine, I'm sure it could pick up a few little gold nuggets, if I tried! My Husband has the Explorer 2, and I've used it on several occasions. The Explorer is similar to the Quattro in some settings, but then it can be quite different too. The tunes are a little crazy at times, and I find I have to sometimes keep readjusting the settings, because the ground here makes it hard to stablise. I don't feel the Explorer locks onto targets as good as the Quattro, but It does tend to go a bit deeper. But at the end of the day, my hubby would agree with me that I seem to recover more targets than he! Also, I found that in some cases, where the Quattro didn't pick up targets, by fine tuning the Explorer, it did pick up those targets the Quattro couldn't detect. At the beach, I find the explorer and Quattro are on a par depth wise, so I'd be happy with either machine, but if the sand has some minerization, then the Quattro will perform better with less adjusting, so you have to adjust the Explorer accordingly to have the same overall performance. I believe the Quattro, being a later model, the computer may be a touch updated on the Explorer, with newer technology. It's interesting to see the new X Terra out. I always felt that a waterproof Quattro would be the bees knees of all the Minelab detectors. But that's just my personal opinion. Though either machine is powerful and serious detectors, the Quattro is a bit more userfriendly, and I love the easier to read screen. Shame it doesn't have a backlight! Hope I've answered your question.

Ok Angela, I really thank you for the input on the Quattro. Although the Explorer II is an extremely nice instrument it doesn't seem to have that lock on sound for like coins and I would like to try the Quattro myself and compare. Wow you are really lucky to live in gold country. If I were you I'd have a SD2200 working the soil for those big nuggies out there. I've got a couple of X-TERRA 70's coming in next week and really anxious to try one. Yeah the display on the Explorer is really kinda hard for me to see and glad to hear the Quattro is a little better. I bet you do have some hot ground there Angela, I know ole Jonathan Porter has to fight a lot of those bad conditions out there. Are you and the Hubby scuba divers ? I hope the sharks aren't too much trouble for y'all. Well you sure have been a great help to me on the Quattro Angela and I hope you get the Excaliber soon and try it out in the deep blue. God Bless y'all and many thanks again for the advice.

Hello John, just got in from work, and checking my emails! My hubby scuba dived for over 20 years. He use to do it for a living, and was into dredging for gold for years, until they banned it here in Australia. This is part of the reason he wants to get back into diving, so he made a hookah system, which he feels bets carrying tanks on your back, and leaves you a lot freer. He has tried it out here in the local swim holes, and at the beach. Works great. It will give us an hour's air supply for both of us, at about 30ft down. That's why the reason for the Excalabar! I love snorkling so have as much fun as the scuba divers at the beach. I've found a few old bottles snorkling in about 6-8ft of water, at the beach. As for sharks, he has never seen on in all his years of diving, but we've heard stories of others who have. He used to dive out on what's called Seal Rocks, where the seals congregate, but because the great whites also hang around, I'm not keen on letting him go there again!
Also we had an SD2000, and he found a lot of nuggets with it. Still kept a few of them, they range from a few grams weight to half an ounce. All the best with trying out the Quattro John!
