Tones and Target IDs

I have been reading the manual for the Quattro
and am a bit confused. For this post,
I'll call COIN and COIN/JEWELRY modes Coin Mode,
and RELIC and ALL METAL modes Metal Mode.

The manual says that target IDs in the negative range
indicate a ferrous object; positive, non-ferrous.
The tones are what's confusing me.

In Metal Mode, low tones will tell me it has a high ferrous content.
My question is: Why do I need a low tone to tell me the object
has a high ferrous content if the ID will tell me the same thing?

I guess I'm confused how the tones and IDs interact.
If anyone wants to take a crack at explaining it, I'm all ears.

Coin Mode seems to make more sense to me, assuming I'm on the right track.
The ID will tell me the ferrous content and the tone will provide
the object's conductivity.

Thanks for any insight.
