Tones and the Omega

Well-known member
I just got back from 9 days up in Mn and once again hunted an old fairgrounds and a couple of small town city parks. I have hunted these sites for over 20 years while vacationing up there. Although I did have my F 75 LTD along, I solely used the Omega the entire trip. The main decision I made was to dig every zinc/near zinc reading. I hunted about 75/25 with 2d and 3d tones. All in all, I dug 138 Memorial cents. Of other mid tone hits, I dug a 1902 and a 04 IH cent and a 2 1/2 cents "good in trade" token. Both IH cents had vdi readings of 77, lock on. Both were about 3" deep. I also dug 2 1942 Mercury dimes, a 35 Buffalo nickel and a 43 war nickel as well as about a dozen wheats. I hunted with the small 5" coil almost all the time and dug two coin targets in the 5-6" depth range and both had good tone. Since I was screen watching, I ended up hunting a good bit with 2d tone. GB was usually 62-68, sen. 99, disc.1 and tones as mentioned.

Just as a safety precaution, check the little (I mean little) screws are on the coil wire connection that plugs into the screen to insure they remain tight. I lost one on the 10" coil and it thus won't make a solid connection and the coil becomes unstable.

I was swapping coils back-and-forth for the different sites I've been working in August, mostly using the stock 10" concentric coil (about 75% like you), but decided to leave the 5" DD mounted to my Omega for September, or at least I have the first 7 days.

As usual, I run with my Sensitivity as high as possible, usually '99', and reduce it when necessary due to EMI problems at challenging sites. Monday I had to lower it to '45' and '52' at two locations but my friends gave up on the noise with their detectors. Most often I opt for the d2 Audio ID but sometimes select d4 Tone ID for the typical coin-producing playground areas.

Unfortunately, for me, I've only come up with wheaties for older coins so far this month. Rain hit yesterday and a bit on Monday and I had to pass up a couple of older locations. Maybe I can get to them in the next couple of days as I have that urge to pop some silver. I did manage to get a clad half on Sunday afternoon at about 8", and then another half (clad again) on Monday morning from about 6

Thanks, Monte. I just researched the 2 1/2 cents "in merchandise" token and it was issued by a billiards parlor in Bemidji, Mn that has been closed since the mid 40's. Yes, I am finding the Omega quite difficult to put down. I still don't like my trash pieces to nickel (same readings) ratio, but I am digging nickels and some older varieties of them. HH jim tn

That sounds like a great hunt Jim, and it also sounds as if the Omega is making a pretty good impression. Like you, it is now the machine I grab first, although I do sometimes force myself to use some of my other machines (why have them, otherwise). I mainly use the 10' coil as the standard coil, but interchange when I feel the need. I mainly use d2 in tones, and by allowing a bit of latitude in the readings, I am definitely not disappointed in the Omega's performance. I've found the 10" coil to be quite good in trashy ground, as long as I take things a bit slower and more carefully. Congratulations on your finds, and hope that you keep having success and enjoying the Omega.

Thanks, T. I do switch back and fourth between detectors, too. New spots usually get the LTD first, but something new of late has been far and in between. When ever I get a different detector, I like to re-hunt behind myself and others. if the new one produces some keepers, as the Omega seems to be doing, then it becomes a keeper. I am finding that I really do like it. I also use the 10" coil a lot and find it does do well in fairly heavy trash. That 5" coil in the trash is a real killer, though, and does get very nice depth. One of my 2 wheats this morning was all of 6" and was within 3" of a pull tab. I was in 3d tones and while I couldn't get a good pin point, I was able to zero in on the wheat with the high tone and a good vdi reading. I love it when a good target comes to light under those circumstances. HH jim tn

is just one of those things we have to deal with. A lot depends upon the sites we hunt. So far this month, at least thru the 8th, the 5

Monte, I am re-hunting some really trashy spots to get a good feel for what the Omega is all about and I must state it is really impressing me. Quite frankly, there simply is tons of tabs and can slaw pieces that read 56,57 and 58 and those readings have got to be dug. Among the trash, nickels, however, are coming to light. Most impressive to me, though, is how many coin targets the Omega is sniffing out from spots I personally have pounded along with many other hunters. I hunted a spot this morning that I have been over previously and saw two other swingers hunting the same stretch yesterday and I eked out a 57 Washington quarter, 6 wheats and several pre 82 Memorials cents and a few clad pieces. None were all that deep, but almost all were nestled nearby some trash item. In fact, many of the dirt clods had a trash item along with the coin. This morning I was in 3d tones, 99 sen. 1 disc. and using the small 5" coil. GB was 54 to 59 on this stretch. Usually my gb on this site as a whole is in the mid 60's. I think for my old ears, 3d (high tone) may over all work best for me. I just listen for the high tone among the trash and work the target from there. The Omega is proving, as you and others have stated, to be one h*** of a detector. HH jim tn

That is really amazing, especially factoring in the cost of the Omega. Can you imagine if they add more power and features like on the F75/T2? They wouldn't need to add much to make it the #1 coin machine out there...

You are right earthmansurfer, considering the cost, the Omega is a down right amazing detector. When I retired is 06, I bought the F 75 and traded a cz3d for a T 2 and then late last year got the F 75 LTD and over this time span found a lot of old coins and jewelry with those detectors. Since getting the Omega a couple of months ago I've been re-hunting some of my yesteryear haunts and the Omega is pulling out numerous old coins. No matter how hard a site gets hunted, all the goodies are never gotten, as we all know, but the Omega is amazing me on how well it does in heavy trash. In my ground it doesn't have quite the depth of my other detectors, but in trash I am finding it is more then equal to the task of finding good targets others detectors have missed. HH jim tn

Similar story. I used the T2 for 3 years and was fairly adept at it's language. Here in N

a force to be reckoned with, regardless of what make/model is pitted against it! :detecting:

It impressed me so much, along with my T2 and then working with the other Teknetics' models, that I made a total brand switch. While all great units, the Omega and 5" DD are becoming my main-use combo of late!

Yes, and if we want the 5

I got the three coil package with my Omega and I am finding that each coil has its place. I, two, am a DD advocate, but there are times when I still want some decent area coverage, but not as much as the 11" and a little more then the 5." For coin shooting on moderate trashy sites and depth is not as much of an issue, I am finding the 10" coil to be an excellent choice. HH jim tn

I'd probably use my 11" DD more on the Omega, but with the same size coil on my T2, I seldom bother. Besides, most of my favored sites might let me work an 8" or sub-10" elliptical concentric, but I'm doing rather well with the round 5" DD lately. :hot:

You are quite correct that all three coils have their place and function with the Omega (or could with the Gamma or Delta).

Monte

I've recovered either coins or jewelry of silver 4 of the past 5 days with the 5" coil on, so until I hit a few days of a dry spell silver wise, the little coil is staying on for me as well. HH jim tn
