Took the DeLeon out today..

And wished I had made some good finds to post. We hunted an old store (early 1900) which is now a residence, and thought there was a Saloon nearby, but may have been incorrect. Regardless, neither of us found anything (though I did dig a couple old mason jar lids with the porcelain lids).

Then we went to an old school house I'd hunted last year. There was a pile of rubble last year in the field, and I managed 4-IH's and a Large Cent. The owner told me they were going to haul-off the debris, which was gone today, but still couldn't eek-out one find between the two of us.

So, we hit a local park on the way home....just to dig SOMETHING! I dug 3-4 Memorials, a (clad) dime and quarter.

We've really been missing the mark on our last few hunts. I know that's just "part of the deal", and can't complain since we'd had some pretty good hunts. We've made a vow to spend the winter researching, and make a fresh start come spring. I guess that's part of the excitement of detecting......the slump can be broken at any time

Smitty, I have days where it is all trash and no keepers in my pouch, but all it takes is one find to get me all fired back up again about detecting. It sounds as though you have some promising sites to hunt but research will locate untouched areas in your area that can produce some nice coins. Check out your local Historical Society for information about groves or wooded areas that were used by local churches to hold picnics many years ago. County atlas books are another excellent resource for locating long forgotten places people used years ago. Good luck in your research this winter.

Hey Joe! lol, I know...and I fished for years, so I know 'ya don't always catch 'em. Just never experienced such a dry spell. I forgot to mention we'd also located an old long-gone race track (for cars), and walked a bit of it, but it was extremely overgrown, even the asphalt on the track was mostly overgrown. We walked about 1/4 of one of the high-banks. May have to see if enough of the growth dies-off after a few good frosts.

The local Historical Society(s) here don't offer help to MDers (if they were to know that's what a person does :)), but we do use a couple sets of older plat maps as well as Library resources, not to mention that I ran a business in a farming community so I got to know a lot of folks on a personal level, and the ones I don't know are generally known by the ones I do know.....if that makes any sense at all.

It's really sad, because once I got into detecting, and researching the history of the county I live in, as well as the City (settled 1823).....to see how much was dozed-over, filled-in, paved-over....makes one wonder how much is buried under all that fill, concrete, and asphalt.

So, in the meanwhile, I'll bide my time, bite the bullet....and know it's just a matter of time before I'm back to diggin' some nice goodies outta the dirt

Thanks!
Smitty
