Tool Update...

Its stil a bit too frozen to :detecting: and
so I went walking with the dog at a site
I hunt a lot..

Took the Ames 7 in 1 garden tool I bought
just to fool around..
I dug a few holes in different spots ( iFILLED em dont worry)
THe tool really went in great even tho the ground is still
hard about an inch down.. it did REAL good in the woods
where the ground was softer .. I cut a few roots with the
serated edge and it was no big deal to cut them .. .
It seems like it goes thru the frozen /hard stuff without much effort
even less it seems than hard ground baked in the summer.. THAT will
be a good test for it .. now all i need is Summer or at least spring!!
All in all i think im gonna like this tool

I have used the same unit and I will give you a hint on what you will experience digging in baked summer dirt.....frustration!
It isnt really a great tool for getting into the baked hard-pan. Go to a gravel parking lot and give it a try. Pretty much the same thing you will experience this july.
The best tool I hve found for getting into the hard, baked stuff is just a big ol' hunting knife.A Sharp point to cut your way down through the dirt will be what you will need when attacking the sun-baked soil.
I like my ames when the spring rains have softened things up though.

Thjanks Gory i Hate runing any of my
good knives tho... maybe ill get a cheap
one just to try

i took a grinder and made the tip more pointed and thinner. also made some gooves on the other side of the blade by using the side of my bench grinder stone. pretty well matched the original side. one of the best things you can do to any digger is sharpen both sides. a sharp tool is the key. while your at it, go ahead and put a sharp edge on your hoe and shovel. you will be amazed how much difference it makes.

Yeah, mine is just a cheap no-name hunting knife I got at a garage sale for 4 bucks.
I carry a flat file in my puch to put a new edge on it at the start of each hunt. In other words, it is a cheap knife and I treat it that way.
Does the job very well though.
My hunts are pretty much in grassy parks so a big ol' Lesche isn't relly needed.
64 degrees here so spring has sprung in some parts of the country.

Thanks for teh info... its gonna be in the 50s
tommorrow and tuesday ...maybe it is gettin
to be spring
