Hello again all you treasure hunters! Hope you all did some hunting this past weekend and brought home some nice keepers for all your collections. That being said.....let's get to it!
I actually did about an hours worth of hunting on Friday Night so there were a couple finds made then. I was chatting with Loren....a buddy of mine that has a Garrett Ace 250 (hardly ever uses it) and I decided since I had the detector in the car, to try around his Apartment Complex once again. We have found a few Injuns here before along with a Silver Quarter, Merc and a few Wheats so I knew there was still a chance for a few to be there still. I decided to hunt an area that I hadn't worked yet along the Curb and Gutter. I detected this area and was able to pull 2 Wheats from here. I then tried the Boulevard once again hoping to get a Deep Squeak that I may have missed hoping to find a piece of Silver here. Loren brought out his detector and he was getting signals all over the place. It was so bad I finally asked what he had it set on and he replied "All Metal". I looked at him and started laughing and he asked "what?". I then told him he was picking up every piece of Metal in the ground and told him to go to the Coins Preset. After that, he started to find a few New Coins and even got into a small area where he kept telling me he had a Nickel Reading so I went over to locate it for him with my X-1 Probe. Turned out to be a small piece of a Aluminum Can. Then he goes over the area and tells me there is another Nickel. I check it again with the Probe and another piece of Can Slaw. He then says another Nickel and I looked at him shaking my head and laughing
at him telling him it wasn't a Nickel....it was just another piece of Can and got up and left the area while he stood there and said "but there is a Nickel Reading here!". I tried explaining it to him but you could tell he didn't get it which made it all the funnier.
I then told him to check somewhere else and kept hunting.
Shortly after this, Loren wanted to check somewhere else and it took me a minute to think of a spot to go. We only had a half hour left before it turned dark out so it had to be quick. I then remembered that I had permission to hunt a house yard in town here so I told Loren let's go. I then remembered that John, the home owner, had a small dog that likes to bark a lot and that Loren didn't have any Headphones so I told him he better leave his detector at home since it is quite loud and would drive the dog nuts if they were home. He didn't care so he put it inside and we went and tried the yard. I tried out in a ditch area that looks pretty original but must have been filled a bit up by the sidewalk due to lack of signals. I hunted this area and was rewarded with an Indian Head Penny, 1 Wheat Penny and a Mercury Dime. I then tried along the front of the house which I knew had a bunch of fill added to it since John had told me this before and was shocked to see another Merc come out of the ground. After this find, I packed it in and took Loren back home. So Friday netted me an Indian Head Penny, 2 Merc's, and 3 Wheat Pennies which wasn't bad at all for such a short little hunt.
Saturday, Tim wanted to get out and do some hunting so I went and picked him up and headed out early again. We decided to check out some Road Construction that we both knew about. We tried this for a little while and all we could find were a few Wheats. During this hunt, a lady was out in here yard and came up to Tim and asked if he could widen the Driveway for her when they come to do the Street. Tim told her to just talk to the crew when they show up to work in that area and tell them what she wants. It was kinda funny that she thought we worked for the City or the Construction Outfit and bad in one way since she will chat with that crew later on thinking that she won't have to pay anything extra for a wider driveway but most likely will. Bad Tim!
Nothing like throwing a monkey wrench into progress.
We then moved onto the next town and found there was a Park there. It wasn't that big but there were a few things in it. We hunted this for about an hour and Tim was the lucky one to find the majority of the keepers here. I got 2 or 3 Wheats here and Tim got an Indian Head Penny, a few Wheats and I believe a Merc.
After this we stopped off at the School and did a quick check in an area where it looked like it could have been used for Picnicking or a Small Park. I think Tim found 1 Wheatie here and I was lucky to pull a Silver Quarter here. At first, I didn't know it was Silver until I seen the back which had just a bit of Silver showing....other than that......the Quarter was Black and looked like Clad. I wiped the date area off a bit and seen the date 1934. Not a bad little find I thought.
We then decided to go check out a Fairgrounds that we both had never been too. It looked good when we seen it but soon found out that it was a tough one and must have had ground work done at one point due to lack of Deep Targets. Lots of New Stuff here but where were the Deeper Targets??? I ended up finding pretty much the only area that held any finds and wouldn't you know it......I parked the car right next to this spot. I didn't know it at first but on the way back to the car, I ended up finding a Merc. I then found another Merc shortly after this one and then started to work the area a bit. Tim came by and asked if I had found anything and I told him 2 Merc's right were I was hunting. Tim replied that all he had found was a Wheatie. We then started working this area a bit more and to my surprise.....out pops an 1892 Barber Dime!
I then told Tim I had just found Barber and we both started working a little more carefully now since there was Barber here. We hunted this for about another 30 minutes or so and got a couple more keepers before we decided to move on. Tim found another Wheatie and a Merc. I got into a small area and pulled out 2 Rosie's and 4 Wheats.
We then come through another town and I noticed a Ball Diamond. We stopped and tried it out for a little bit to see if it was old or not. At first, all I could find was Deep Clad so there had to be fill added at one time. Tim got lucky and pulled a Silver Quarter so then we knew it was old enough at least for Silver. We hunted this a bit more and Tim got a Merc, Rosie and a Ring. All I could find was 1 Keeper.....1 lonely Mercury Dime that was all of 10" Deep or better.
After this, we decided to head back to a Park we had pulled some Barbers from in the past and found the Park to be fairly busy. Tim hunted an area where he had pulled 2 Barber Quarters from 1 hole and was doing good until it got dark. Tim pulled 3 Indian Heads, a V-Nickel, a Buffalo Nickel, and a Wheatie or 2 I believe. I hunted an area where there was dirt moved around and only found a couple Wheats and then found an Indian Head Penny in a grassy area. We then packed it in for the day. Lots of bouncing around from one area to another trying to hit that 1 Honey Hole but it all worked out by the end of the day for both of us.
My finds on Saturday were 1 Silver Quarter, 1 Barber Dime, 3 Mercury Dimes, 2 Roosevelt Dimes, 1 Indian Head and 18 Wheat Pennies. Tim got a Silver Quarter, a few Silver Dimes (he had a total of 5 Silver), 3 Indian Heads, a V-Nickel, a Buffalo Nickel and some Wheats.
Sunday, I decided to go try 2 Fairgrounds where I know Silver is at. The first Fairgrounds was a tough one. The finds are there but the one area where I know there is some Super Deep Stuff at, there was a few people there doing things so I passed on that spot. I hunted in an area where there was a lot of stuff found and only came up with a couple Wheats. I then tried by a building and found the High Grade Barber Dime here. I then left shortly after this to the other Fairgrounds.
I started hunting and found a Wheatie and a Merc within about 15 minutes. I then kept working and was pulling up a lot of Clad and a few Wheats. Some of the Wheats and Silver were as Deep as the Clad so you have to dig all Coin Readings due to them being shallow. I also pulled a few Tokens as well. I was getting tired of finding all the New Coins and was about to leave but stopped. It was already around 4:00pm and all I had was a Barber Dime, Mercury Dime, a few Tokens and a few Wheats. I sat there knowing the Silver was there but where was that one spot that no-one else would have hunted and then it hit me. There were some old roads that were grass covered that are gravel so I decided to try it. To my surprise, this was my turning point on Sunday. As soon as I started working this area, out pops a Wheatie and it was shallow. Then a Silver Rosie!
Then another Rosie.
In about 20 minutes time, I had pulled 4 Silver Dimes and a few Wheats from this area. It was hot out so I decided to go get a Cold Drink and Gas. I came back and put the Joey Coil on and all I could find were 1 more Wheatie in the Gravel. I did manage to pull a Barber Dime which was crazy that was in a grassy area. I also got another Wheatie by the car before I called it quits. Sunday's Totals were 5 Tokens, 19 Wheats, 3 Roosevelt Dimes, 3 Mercury Dimes and 2 Barber Dimes. Again....another successful hunt.
Total Finds were 17 Silver again which were 1 Silver Washington Quarter dated 1934, 3 Barber Dimes dated 1892,1912(High Grade),1912-d, 8 Mercury Dimes dated 1918,1919-s,1942-d,1943-d,(3)1944,1944-d and 5 Roosevelt Dimes dated (2)1953-d,1954-d,1962-d and 1964-d. I found 2 Indian Heads and they are dated 1901 and 1906. I also pulled 5 Tokens this last weekend. They are a Good For 25c In Trade / 17456 Token, (2) Clown Tokens / No Cash Value, West Line Rec Forest Lake / The Best In Fun For Everyone Play Value 25c, and a Ship Token / Darien Lake Fun Country Token. Wheat Pennies totalled another 40 of them which are dated 11,(2)17,(2)17-s,18,19-d,25-d,(3)29-d,(3)30-d,(2)34,34-d,(2)36-d,(2)37,38,40,(2)40-d,42,(2)44,(2)44-d,(2)46-d,(2)50-d,(2)51-d,52-d,53-d,55-d and 58-d. Misc. Items included 2 Keys, a Tube of Lipstick, half of an Aluminum Heart that reads My Love / I Give, a Piece of Silver with a 4-Leaf Clover type thing on it and a Tootsie Toy Car which is a Fiat Abarth. Clad totals were 22 Quarters, 25 Dimes, 2 Nickels and 106 Pennies. Hope you enjoy the Pics and thanks for looking. Good Luck and HH to you all.
P.S. Total Silver for the year.......249 and counting......
