Trashy sites....Old homeplaces, etc.

Old Sox

I am lovin this new SE, but am having problems in trashy spots. Most places I hunt are trashy so it can be a huge problem. The stock coil just seems to take forever to recover after a null. I am sure a smaller coil is the ticket, but which one and how small. Is the 8" Sunray coil appropriate or would I have to go smaller. I dont really want to shell out any more money yet, but it looks like I may have to just to hunt the moderately trashy spots.
Any help here would be very much appreciated!!

Thanks

...you'll still get a tone over a good (non-discriminated) target, even if you've lost your threshold.

generally speaking, of course. i don't have a whole lot of time on the SE, either, but that's what i've noticed.

If the place has Tons of Iron in the Ground, then you may have to get either a 5" Coil or even a 6" Coil. Bryce has been have some great success with his 6" Coil so this maybe the ticket here. I like my Joey Coil 5"X10" made by Coiltek. It's 5" Wide and 10" Long, so you have the Width of the Smaller Coil and the Coverage of the Larger Coil to your advantage. This Coil works great in Trashy Areas but if the Iron is everywhere, then the 5" or 6" Coil would be preferred for best performance. The 8" Coils work also in Moderate Trash and get good Depth as well. It just depends on what your Hunting Style is and if you have the Patience of using a Small Coil such as the 5" or 6". The Smaller the Coil, the less Area you will cover, but you will find items that the Larger Coils will mask. Good Luck with your decision on the right size Coil you need and HH with it when you get it.:detecting:

you might also try all metal ...pretty noisy and can drive ya nuts at times but at least you will hear every thing and not be afraid of the null possibly missing some coins in the mix......BUT thats only if you dont want to spend the money on a smaller coil......i agree with james smaller is better in high trash

Thanks fellas, I have experimented with all metal with the DFX and the X70. The mixed mode option on the DFX was ok, I noticed more signals with the X70, but had no idea of the amount of stuff in the ground until I tried all metal with the SE. The DFX had nowhere near the signals of the SE, it was mindblowing. I know that there are some good targets still here, we found some nice Missouri state seal buttons, minnie balls, grape shot and older coins and I am positive we didnt get all of it. I thought I liked all metal but not at this place. I had to leave. I am wondering if a small coil will help.

yes a smaller coil would help a LOT

Yep, I agree with Minelab Locust ...
I have a Sunray X5, and snooping amongst heavy trash with such a small coil enables you to see where the individual iron items are.
Instead of using a bigger coil that "sees" a half dozen or so targets at once, which then makes the Explorer null, if you have iron discriminated out...

Or worse still the Explorer rumbles almost every where you scan because it is "seeing" so much iron at once, if you are working with ironmask wide open !

If you detect in either a blank screen, or in iron mask (wide open,) with ferr. sounds, with a mid _ to low threshold tone the iron hits give a nice deep rumble.
You can then probe about, noting where the rumbles occur.
You now know where your iron is lying! ;)
NOW ~ you can scan [between] your known iron lays...:smoke:

Thanks again. I havent tried ferrous yet, that sounds like it will help. In Cond. everything was high pitched and bout sent me screamin'!!

I went ahead and posted an ad on the classifieds looking for a smaller coil. Hopefully someone has one laying around that they arent using. Thanks for the help!!
