Trivia Question

Alexander Graham Bell invented the first metal detector in a attempt to save Pres. McKinley

It was President James Garfield that was shot, and Bell had invented the first metal detector to find the bullet. Time frame about Aug. 1881. The metal detector worked everywhere except on the President. Unknown at the time because it was new, the President was laying on a new type mattress made with metal coil springs. We all know now what happens when trying to detect on top of iron, looking for a different target.
Mr. Bill

I guess you show the same show on Discovery last nite that I did. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
I always thought it was Fisher (M-Scope).

David Hughes invented the induction balance, and Bell later adapted the concept to detect metal. It's probable that Hughes was able to detect metal with his device, but he didn't apply it to that purpose, so I guess Bell gets the nod.
