Two Headed Square Nail???

Erik in NJ

New member
This is the target I dug yesterday between the two Large Cents - they are both ca 1800 so I assume a similar age for this. Ever seen something like this before? Any idea what it was used for?

Probably an old rivet that was left when the articles rusted or rotted away. Then again way back when the sophistication was not there and could have been struck in error kind of thing.

Because it's square, I would think a rivet for something not meant to turn.
Like a part to some machinery or hand tool.
